TPI 350? Should I build this or buy crate motor??
I have been thinking real hard about buying a 350 tpi crate motor. Problem is it will cost me around $5700 plus intake and exaust mods.
Would I be better off to build something like what I have below? (It is from 'Atilla the Fun'...seemed like he had a good bit of knowlege) Any idea what the cost might be for me to build this myself? Thanks!
TPI 350
This is the torquiest 350 ever. It's TPI. And with a little work it can
be made emissions legal. Just add the external EGR kit from SD.
It out-torques many 383s, and offers more MPG, too!
Now, here's the results, then what it takes to make them.
RPM TQ HP
2400 423 193
2600 442 219
2800 458 244
3000 459 262
3200 472 288
3400 475 307
3600 468 321
3800 478 346
4000 487 371
4200 479 383
4400 469 393
4600 458 401
4800 450 411
5000 437 416
5200 415 411
5400 389 400
5600 367 392
5800 350 387
6000 338 386
This was done using all of the following :
A 30-over 350 with flat top pistons
poorly ported iron Vortec L31 Chevy truck heads
COMP 08-304-8 cam
SD Vortec TPI base
Accel large tube runners
Accel 58 mm TB
24 # injectors
43 psi of fuel pressure
93 octane pump gas
1.75" long tubes such as Hooker 2210-1HKR
2.5" dual exxaust with FlowMaster mufflers :-(
MSD coil
And I suggest you use 1.50:1 In / 1.60:1 Ex roller rockers
Properly geared, this'll run low 12s at sea level.
And spank a peanut-port 454 with intake, cam, and headers.

I dont have any of that info. This build was from a guy who got banned from this site. I realize the build itself may be questionable and will require more research and validation given this guys history; but overall do you think I could build a motor like this that would be as reliable, but for less money than a crate motor?

Time for YOU to do some internet research
Somewhere like Summit has most of the parts ;
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-151124/
Also depends on what other parts you can bring to the party from another engine ,
How much you going to pay for machine work ;
this ready to build block may be cheaper than machining a junkyard one
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-150100/
Some parts ( intake ) can also be had used for far cheaper

Its realistic to get that type of torque out of a well thought out TPI 350.

Re: TPI 350? Should I build this or buy crate motor??
Dyno Don, quite a while back when I first started thinking about doing a motor swap I was convinced I wanted to build a 383 and you suggested a 350 and ever since then I have been leaning in that direction.
I think that was a good recommendation and I appreciate it.
Since then I have looked on this site and the internet for crate motors (and good or not... the Golen is one of only a handful, but they are all in the $5500-6000 range plus intake/exaust/ignition/etc.....)
My question now is......... can I go buy the parts I need and either build it myself or have a machine shop either do it or assist for considerably less? Any idea what it might cost to do the build above? I am sure someone (or, more likely, many people) on this site have done something similar

Re: TPI 350? Should I build this or buy crate motor??
I have about $4500.oo into my 357 4 Bolt main 370 HP at 4700 RPM and 427 TQ at 2500 RPM's
This Includes Intake Injectors Good heads chip Ect and It Ca smog Legal.
Build you'r own this way You Know whats Inside and you can build it for what you need or what it to do not some place that just claims it will do this.
My car weights 3500 Lb's and will do 12.7 1/4 miles times It not super fast but I can give a lot cars a run for there money I get 32 MPG at 65 MPH and on Reg Pump Gas and can be driven everyday in stop and go trafic if needed.

Re: TPI 350? Should I build this or buy crate motor??
it is easy to pick the wrong parts and have a less than optimal , mismatched combo like you do
Big flowing heads with little cam

I have never seen you put up a dyno sheet for you new engine.
Are those numbers guesstimates from Desktop Dyno?

For instance, on www.summitracing.com, the Comp 08-304-8 is $288.95.
www.sdparts.com has a package deal for Vortec heads and Vortec TPI base that has everything you need to bolt the heads onto your block. About $1400.
You can take it from there.
