as it was, just a 83 l69 with a 95 350 ported and polished 416 heads 194-150's mild cam high rise with a holley, t5 and built disk 10 bolt, 410's and detroit. lowered, most suspension done. after one blown 10 bolt, one hash 5 speed, it was not enough 4 me, ive had a few diffrent motors, dz302,406, 355sbc. just always had to part it out to pay for the wifes needs.. lol

so plans now, i got a 454 block. in really good shape all taken apart, no crank, oil pan, timing chain cover, valve covers.
no heads, sold the 781 heads
forged speed pro pistons .60 over on scat h-beams rods
all new and all free,

i just sent all of it to the machine shop so i can out it together, i am going to run the t-5 for a bit untill it blows and then ill go t56, i want to run a single turbo set up, but i think headers are going to be a pain, and i have no idea on heads yet might just get aftermarket to keep weight down, who knows yet.

any one build turbo headders for this set up?
any ideas on a good set of heads,
ill get casting numbers and part numbers off my pistons tonight.

Re: Turbo 454.....

I'd be interested to see how you will fit a turbo and the piping in that engine bay. Their is hardly room to fit headers on a big block.

Re: Turbo 454.....

Your best bet for manifolds is to build a custom set. I doubt you'll find any off the shelf style that will work without doing a lot of modifications.

Re: Turbo 454.....

I've done the research myself... there are no off the shelf shorties or existing cast manifolds that work for a BBC in a 3rdgen. You're on your own here.

Those 781s actually would probably have been a good head to use for boost.... big 118cc chambers, 270cc ports. Would work well with boost. I have those heads on my 454. They are probably the best factory head to use on a street/strip car. If you have no heads now, I'd suggest a set of aluminum oval ports, like the ones Edelbrock sells (and the same ones GM puts their name on and sells on top of the ZZ427/454/502). Great street/strip head.

Re: Turbo 454.....

I would build a set of log style exhaust manifolds. Make them hug the engine as tight as possible, build a thin heat shield on them also. Then its your choice... front mount or rear mount turbo...

Heads? Anything aluminum!!!! Wow is it heavy enough being a BBC. Haha

Re: Turbo 454.....

yea ive looked around to with no luck, i build stainless log style manifolds for hondas and dsm's so i migh try some magic on this, as for heads, yea i am trying to keep the weight down, but no really to worried, i am not going to autocross this any more, just more of a show and go, maybe a few 1/4 miles..

i looked in to the Edelbrock heads and there a good set up for the price, i can also get a set of 781s ready to run for 125$ or my father said he would give me a set of 396 heads with a 113cc chamber.

Re: Turbo 454.....

so got some free heads today, 3999241- looks like a 113cc chamber, has aftermarket studs, seem to be in awsome condition. maybe a little bowl clean up and gasket matching i think they might work pretty well with my set up, lookin at around 9:5-9:1 compression with my speed pro l2399f .060 pistons

Will they work with those dome pistons?

Re: Turbo 454.....

115 CC with a dome piston is more than likely gonna yeild over 10:1. (Need specifics of the piston..)

Flat top piston with a 112 CC head is already at 9:4.

With you picking up the iron heads, I would look into different pistons or selling the heads you got for money towards the ProComps.

The ProComps are fine nowadays with the new castings (the old castings have really bad reviews, just search on the internet) but the new ones with cleanup out of the box work perfectly fine.

In regards to manifolds for a turbo build, you could look into 88-05 Suburban BBC manifolds and see if they could work by flipping them upside down. Put one turbo in the battery spot and one in the charcoal canister spot.

Run the downpipe either ontop of the hot pipe, over the manifold, then down behind the manifold and under the car or try to run the downpipe below the hot pipe and run solid mounts + a turbo Kmember for extra clearance.

If you run the downpipe over the hot pipe/manifold, you can always V band sections of it for removal when you do work on the engine.

This is the problem to overcome though.

Running a pipe over the manifold here is practically impossible.

You *could* Y the downpipes over to the passenger side in front of the engine.. but this might require relocationg things like Radiator or the like.. unless you somehow ran it really far down.. but not below the radiator..

Food for thought.

Re: Turbo 454.....

my pistons are speed pro forged l2399f .060 over it says they have a .095 dome
compression distance, 1.645, bore dia of 4.310 i think as for the heads i really just want to get it going..

u was thinkin of building my own stainless log style manifold with a single turbo sitting in the battery spot,

I have a set mild port work hyd flat tappet cam 10.25 compression had at track last week ran 11.06@119 off the trailer breaking up on top end due to bad vac leak so in my eyes those heads are awsome for a budget

Re: Turbo 454.....

Any update on this. Im in the same boat except for twin GT45s. There's a thread on ttf about flipping the patriot H8012 headers around and routing your piping that way. I actually used those headers for my initial BBC swap so all I gotta do is turn them around and cut the flanges off, weld vbands on and route hotside to each turbo. Hopefully soon. O I'll probably run some variation of the 990 heads. Whether 990s 188s or 088s. Whatever I can find lol. Street car. Exhaust will run out the fenders from the turbo discharge 4"
