305-350 in CA

Hey guys i just wanted to ask if any of you have swaped a 305 with a 350 here in ca? im sure some of you have but how much work is it other than the actual swap. Will it pass emissions does it have to be refereed. I have always dreamed of owning a camaro now that i do, im dreaming of owning a camaro with a 350 and a five speed cause my 305 is a gutless hunk of junk and u are all correct it should be used as a boat anchore. Any info would be appreciated.

Youi need to check specifics with your local inspectors - they aren't out to get you - just ask, and they'll tell you what's legal; what's not. That's mthe only REAL way to know.

But as I've read here, you have to replace the engine with a newer or same year engine, they do check block ID numbers. And your emissions equipment must be inplace, all stock equipm, ent, unless maybe you are allowed to put newer stuff on as well.

What year car? Is it currently TBI, carb, or TPI?

Much bigger than that can pass in Ca. Know someone with a 421 stroker that passes. Its all in the parts you use and tuning.

Smog machine doesnt detect cubic inches.
Did a 305 to 350 wtih heads/cam/porting/headers yrs ago for a friend passes fine, even with a mail order tune thats a touch on the rich side.

very true. im actually a smog tech in ca , so as long as you use the same year motor and that motor was an option for that year car (or atleast looks like it, some tech glance at them then close the hood) or if you get a newer year motor and put it in you have to get it refereed and as long as it looks like it is a legit swap you should be good, the only s**tty part is that *most* carb legal parts here do about as much as FI cleaner . we cannot see most stuff like cam and internals so as long as timing and everything else is ok then you should be good. hope this helped

Depends upon the heads the 350 has on it. About a 75% chance the answer is "yes".

Re: 305-350 in CA

The only real difference between a 305 and a 350 is the diameter of the pistons and the volume of the combustion chambers in the heads...other than that, they are identical. The 350 will need a bit more air and fuel compared to a 305. I don't know if the stock 305 computer can handle the extra. I am in the same situation...going to upgrade my 305 to a 350, but I have the TPI setup so all I really need is the bigger fuel injectors. Since both 305 and 350 were available in the Camaros, i don't see that the smog referees would have any problem with that as long as the year is right.
