87 TPI 350 replacing 85 305 TPI
I am going to be replacing my LB9 305 tpi engine in my 85 IROC with a stock 350 tpi from an 87 IROC. My question involves the distributor. I believe I need to replace the distributor gear with a melonized one as I am going to be reusing the distributor from the 85. I s this correct? I am assuming the factory roller camshaft is steel in 87? Any input is appreciated.

That's the word from GM.
I've heard that they started using the melonized gear before they started using roller lifters, but I can't back that up. I believe the gears will swap between the distributors if you're getting the '87 piece. But, I can't say that for certain.
