Hey guys, I am going to order a gm crate motor and see that it is sent via truck freight. Just curious how did you guys get your crate motors off the truck and into your garage? I know it's a dumb question but I am not sure what to expect when it arrives at the house and what I need to move the thing into the garage and unload it off the truck.

My engine was on a pallet and off-loaded with a forklift. I don't know if the trucking line will provide that service or not.

Any freight company knowing they are doing a home delivery with such a large crate item, probably has a "tailgate" lowering platform that folds down then lowers to ground level & then a simple pallet jack, which they have on board, is used to roll it off & to where you want it.

Or they might have a forklift on the trailer to unload the crate/pallet like Home Depot/Lowes that uses the forklift that rides on the very back of the trailer & it forks slide into the rear & are used to lift the forklift up & off the ground so that it rides strapped to the very back of the trailer. Most likely the lowering platform & pallet jack though.

If you ask the freight company how they handle unloading such an item at a residence, that is probably what they will tell you.

 

you will be paying more for home delivery and hopefully you did that??? If not, you may find that the truck driver refuses to deliver as they won't be prepared.

it comes down to the driver. They may help you get it into the garage if that's possible or you may find it dropped in your driveway and you take it the rest of the way.

 

Thanks guys, I am ordering the motor from pace performance and they have a home delivery option that will get me a lift gate service to bring it down to the ground. But if it's just sitting on the ground in a pallet that does me no good. I did not realize that the trucks would have pallet jacks in them but it sounds like they do.

i have a good relationship with a local business with a loading dock, forklift and delivery trucks. I have my large parts delivered there, and they let me use the truck w/lift gate to bring them home, free.

But for the OP, yes, most delivery companies will have home delivery which generally means liftgate service.

 

I've seen an extra $75 for "forklift service".

Do you know someone with a pickup and cherry picker? Might make more sense to have it delivered to a dock in the Mesa area - they'll load it onto a pickup for no charge, then you can unload it at home with the cherry picker.

If you don't have a cherry picker or access to one, it makes more sense to spend the money now to buy one now, rather than paying higher freight charges. You will be needing it later.

 

I have a pickup already, Just no cherry picker. For the engine install I was going to do it at a "rent a lift shop" that has a hoist on the ceiling. The place is really cool. I have a membership there so I get full access to a lift and all the tools in the world for $10 an hour.

Usually, the freight carriers will just leave the crate on the dock for you, then you drive a pickup over there and they'll load it via forklift into your truck. Then you use your cherry picker (rent one at any local rental house) to offload from truck to driveway to garage at home.
