Should I or shouldn't I do an LT1 swap?

bought a complete 96 Z to swap the 6spd into my '88 Iroc. Debating on whether or not to swap the LT1 into it as well. I plan on doing heads, cam and intake so wouldn't I be better off leaving the L98 in my Iroc?

Whats everyones opinion on this?

In addition to my 3rd gen I also own a 95 4th gen. yes, it has the optispark but once you have a decent waterpump the optispark is a non issue.

the 96 is obd2 and has the cam position sensor while my 95 doesn't. With a good 93 octane tune, 1.6 rr's, CAI and long tubes the LT1 makes very nice power. With head work and a cam from people such as Elliot then you can get to 400 RWHP and be driveable. But, with bolt ons and a good tune (also 1.6 rr's) the LT1 can get you just about to 300 RWHP with an auto tranny. You'll also get in the 20's mpg on the highway. That's not bad power and the torque curve of an LT1 is awesome. It's ideal for daiily driving.

That's actually a tough one IMO. If you're planning on doing something like a set of 190CC heads in your future, your choices are limited. If you use something like the L98 you have a lot more choices. That out of the way if you were going to a mild set of performance heads I would just run the LT-1 because it already has decent heads to begin with. Have someone throw some porting at em they'd be even better. The cam will be pretty much the same cost, and the LT-1 intake would be good for a significant amount of power so that could be considered "free" at this point. The other boon is you're looking at a way more modern EMS but you will need the stuff to tune it too.

If you like the power of a bolt on LT1, go for it. If you're power hungry and/or love to keep modding, go LSx

From what I understand your better off with the L than the LT1. Unless you want to spend the money to say you've got the LT1 under the hood.

my opinion is if you are gonna swap the engine then make a big difference. the lt1 to me isnt all that impressive nowadays considering you can buy wrecked vehicles with ls 6.0's or 6.2's fairly cheap if you shop, and then there is the Ol' Big Boy LSX course thats a beast all its own as far as price....just me though

Re: Should I or shouldn't I do an LT1 swap?

if it were me, id probably just swap the 6 speed in and sell all the parts from the donor to cover cost of the 6speed swap... the LT1 isnt SO much better then the L98, and def NOT as good as the LS to warrant the trouble and added expense of the swap... btw id probably grab the 4th gen centerconsole too

Re: Should I or shouldn't I do an LT1 swap?

If you already have a donor, you have most of the needed parts.

Its not an "easy" swap IMO, but alot of it is pretty strait forward, but some of its pretty challenging.

But dont get me wrong, i love the LSx's but im also a beleiver in working with what you have

good luck!

The Gen 4 6L and 6.2L engines are NOT cheap.

Lets consider this, he already OWNS the 4th gen. he bought it.

Most budget aftermarket heads only flow just about the same as a LT1 head does stock. The LT1 aluminum heads are capable of being ported to impressive #'s for cheap.

Swap wise, he's got everything he needs to put the LT1 into the 3rd gen because he has a donor car. What will he get? Any bolt-on mods he currently has for his Iroc will swap over. CAI, headers, exhaust.

I say its a done deal. Drop the LT1/6spd in there and drive it. Find a hot-cam while you are at it and you can see 320-330rwhp easy.

Sell your L98 drive train. Some hot-rodder will buy it because lets face it, the L98 still looks bad%%! with the TPI on top.

Or, do a Lloyd Elliot stage 1 heads/cam on the 4th gen and leave your Iroc stock.

Re: Should I or shouldn't I do an LT1 swap?

Go for it. Some say its not an upgrade but try getting the power lt1 get with bolt ons on a l98.

Sell your l98. They are overpriced anyways most good ones sell for $650+. That alone pays for harness work from Pocket and little things you might need to finish it.

If you have a bigger budget then like others said lsx is the way to go.

Re: Should I or shouldn't I do an LT1 swap?

u cant beat the power from a GENIII or VI. just adding a cam and headers gets u there. Initial costs concerning accessory drives and ignition can be pricey but in the long run pay off. Six bolt mains and distributorless ignition are hard to beat
