350 for the formy

so along with my recent 305 plan for a small car and not deciding on a ls1 or sbc i decided to keep the old school sbc in my firebird. i have decided to get a 350 and while waiting on one to be available without any major problems i had a few questions about parts to go with. its just gonna be a daily driver with some pep.

i ordered a summit 1103 cam kit i was wondering if that was worth the 110$ i paid for it
i have a summit dual chain timing gear set for a flat tappet cam
edelbrock performer intake
currently looking for a distributor
and a qjet carb that i am gonna rebuild.

the rest of the drive train is a 700r4 and a stock 10 bolt open differential rear with 3.08 gears

when i put the engine and trans in will this thing make any power at all with the parts i have provided to put together?

What do you have, or what are you planning, for exhaust?

Heads and cam are key to power. That cam isn't anything special, but will typically make more power than the typical factory cam.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 90% of factory 350 heads are junk. Especially true since most used 350's available came from light trucks. Rather than wasting any precious $'s doing something the those heads, these make a great upgrade, and will include everything you need to put them on top of a freshened up 350 shortblock:

It won't be emissions-legal, but neither is a q-jet on an '88 f-body.

Re: 350 for the formy

ill be running shorty 2.5 inch summit racing brand headers. and true dual 3 inch exhaust. some people tell me thats choking the engine but others tell me i should be fine. before i order them id like to be confirmed of that. should i go with the 2.5 inch shorty headers 3 inch shorty headers or 3 inch long tubes? keep in mind i want this to be a street legal historic tagged car that i will be using as a daily driver. i know with long tubes there is ground clearance issues. not quiet sure how bad it is though.

i dont want to put all this money into an engine and get nothing in return. so since i just bought the cam should i just return it and then save money for a better one that would work well with a nice top end?

You are quoting collector size rather than primary tube size. 1.5" primary tubes will limit a 350's useful power to 4000 RPMs or so. Good for low-RPM torque, but not so good for higher RPM power. They may be okay for what you plan on for the car's primary use, but don't be surprised if high-RPM power is disappointing. 1-5/8" primary tube headers might give up a little in the low-RPMs, but will shine in the upper RPMs.

Personally, I'd stay with shorties for a DD. You won't gain much with long tubes with regard to driving performance, and as you've noted, you'll lose valuable ground clearance.

Many people have used that cam successfully. I'd probably pick something from Lunati, Comp, or Crane, though.
