Re: quick cam question

Most likely 280 degree advertised duration hydraulic with a 110 degree centerline.

That's a fair bit of cam.

Re: quick cam question

"fair bit of cam" whats that mean. dont mean to sound like an idiot but i dont know much about cams. any idea what kind of hp this would produce with 2.02 completely worked camel hump heads and a 383 bottom end?

Re: quick cam question

Probably in the 400 range.

"Fair bit of cam" means more power in the higher RPM range and poorer idle quality.

Re: quick cam question

thanks for the input guys appreciate it. so sounds like a decent cam and no need to buy a different one. although with out a cam card i wont have a way of knowing the best timing for it with out a pro's help with tuning

Re: quick cam question

Why do you need the cam card to figure out the timing?

Re: quick cam question

short answer .... I'm an idiot lolol i can assemble a motor no problem (worked machine shop environment for 14 yrs) but when it comes to timing/tuning I'm lost. iv tried and tried and for some stupid reason i just don't get it and I'm a programmer with an education... lol i just cant seem to wrap my brain around timing, duration(how long cam keeps valve open), lift(how far the valve opens), tuning in air fuel mixture etc. i get that deer in the headlights look in my eyes when people explain it. iv read it tons of times and i think i understand the basic principle but making it happen just doesn't happen no dad growing up and no friends that are into cars or can afford to be into them so I'm self taught and probably mediocre when it comes to being mechanically inclined. i know I'm pathetic lol but hey at the end of the day i have fun trying and that's what counts.

Re: quick cam question

All of that is ground into the cam now, it has nothing to do with you.

Re: quick cam question

apeiron ..... your going to make me think aren't you? lol ok but i read how i need to degree the cam then set it to initial tbc..bct... ttb ... you know and then after that is set i have to set the advanced timing then tune my air fuel for the best vacuum for the cam to respond the best.... *sigh* i tried on the green car for about 2 weeks till i finally posted an add on craigslist for someone to come help me. after they fixed my timing that car was laying 138ft of rubber on my road.. before about 50ft. i was way off lol am i missing a simple thought on this?

Re: quick cam question

You don't need to degree the cam, you just have to install it straight up as it's ground right now.

Setting the ignition timing (separate animal from camshaft timing) is just some trivial experimentation.

Re: quick cam question

Well some cam manufactures build their cams with either advance or retard built right in the grind. Some O.E.M. cam gears are built for emissions with a 2 degree retard. So if your installing a cam at 0,your using it as the cam manufacture intended to be used.

Re: quick cam question

The spec is "as much advance as you can get without pinging".

What's going to be on top of this engine?

Re: quick cam question

*sigh* apeiron you just lost me. this build will be, most advance???

350 4bolt standard bore
forged rods and pistons 9.0 to 1
steel stroker crank
port matched, polished and bowl blended 186 camel hump heads with 2.02 valves.
port matched rpm performer intake
650 or bigger cfm blow threw carb
ebay turbo.

only thing i dont have yet is the carb and turbo set up. and this will be bolted to a 700r4 with a 3:42 10 bolt rear.

Re: quick cam question

real quick. i understand i bring my piston up to top dead center on the exhaust stroke line up the dots on the timing chain. put it together and set initial timing to what the cam card says. after that i just dont get it. advanced.. ping.. spark knock the vacumm hose going to the distributor... ?
