Re: n00b oil filter question

Wix or NAPA Gold (rebranded Wix)

No Fram. No STP.

If you don't have an oil cooler tell them you want one for a truck, it's taller.

I thought I heard that AC delco was being manufactured by a different company and that the quality had slipped? Any truth in that?

I usually run either a WIX, Bosch, or Mobil1. Sorry no part numbers. I make sure mine are the taller units too.

Re: n00b oil filter question

sorry about the long response time, noone around me had a WIX filter, and there are no NAPA's (that i know of) close to me so i went with a mobile 1 filter for a 79 C10, fit perfect, also got some new plugs, previous owner had some stupid bosch platinum +4 plugs in it, went with some champion plugs since i have always used them and never had a single problem, also put some nice drilled header bolts in so i can saftey wire them today, PO had some ghetto bolts it looks like he found in his tool box and cut down to size with tin snips in there lol, needless to say they came loose a lot, thanks for the replies!

Re: n00b oil filter question

I have never seen Bosch Platinums run right in an SBC.

I'm not the biggest fan of Champion plugs, but I'm sure they'll work.

Re: n00b oil filter question

I normally use a System 1 reusable filter on my race car. Easy to take apart and inspect.

Moroso, K&N, Mobil 1 or any WIX made filter. There's only a few actual filter manufactures who make all the filters you see on the shelves. Fram does not make oil filters. I wouldn't use a Fram filter if it was free unless it was an emergency.

For an unbiased opinion on anything to do with oil, check out this site
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

Although the information is getting a little outdated, information about different filters can be found here.

Re: n00b oil filter question

I can't speak to the quality, but visually, the new 1218 looks like a cheap piece of crap. I stockpiled them when they became available again, then upon first use discovered that it's built nowhere near the same way the old one (which I still had a few of). I've since converted all of my 1218-equipped cars to WIX/Napa filters.

On my IROC, I use a K&N 3002. It's a longer version of the 2002 mentioned above. Whether or not the filter is any better than a cheap Wix/Napa filter, I couldn't say, but since I only change the oil on the IROC once every year or two, a standard filter winds up being difficult to remove. The K&N has the nut on the bottom that makes removal a snap.

good to know thanks, i only put about 500 miles a year on mine so i change it about just as often lol, next time i will look into one with the nut on the bottom as mine was a tad bit stuck, took some love to get it out!

Re: n00b oil filter question

always used purolator filters without issue. usually ran the truck filter for a little more filtering area and a tad more capacity too.
