388 stroker ?
My friend is wanting to build w motor for his camaro. He has a .060 over block with flat top pistons. He was planning on buying a set of vortecs heads from the jy and porting them himself. He is trying to do a budget build but would like your guy's help on a good cam selection and possible power output or suggestions ect.

Any suggestions or opinions would be great. I'm not 100% on having him run the .060 over block but that's what he wants to do.

Re: 388 stroker ?
It all depends on what he wants to do. If he doesnt care how big of a stall converter for a cam I would go with something like a XE284H or even bigger the XE294H but both of those require at least a 3k stall and make sure the heads can take the lift. But the power of those two plus flat tops and a good intake system. For intake Id go with a RPM intake and like a 750ish cfm carb.

As far as I know he just wants a healthy sounding, good running street car and when its asked to put out she does.

Re: 388 stroker ?
The .060 over thing could end with a lot of gnashed teeth, but usually ends up fine. My 60 over block cracked in the bore first time around the block with it after I built it and put it in. Probably not typical, as I've discovered my car is most likely cursed.
Regardless, tell him to leave the Vortecs alone. If you're gonna port them, just port the exhaust side. I found this post a while back that's really useful, should be a sticky I think...

Dont build a high revving monster, those heads wont support that on a 383. Build something that tops out around 6k. The heads will make great power, but you're pushing them out of their sweet spot with a 383. You'll have to build the engine around the heads.
Also, Vortec 350s with flat tops are already in the 9.7-10.3:1 range. Tell him to consider some dished pistons. Around 14-20 is the sweet spot to keep it around 9.5-10.0:1 if I recall. Hes gonna have a real hard time running flat tops in a 383 with 64cc heads on pump gas, unless he runs a HUUUGE cam. Which will make the engine pretty sluggish since the heads cant flow at the high RPMs needed for that.
Remember, airflow is power. Smaller ports and big cubes wont be able to breathe at high RPMs, but power will be the same as a 350 with those heads, just in a more streetable RPM range. I'd run an xe274 or xe284 neighborhood cam unless you can run a roller. Should net around 375-400 flywheel horsepower assuming everything else is up to par.

Re: 388 stroker ?
I am also doing a 383 and i am kind of leaning towards the vortec heads but am not sure. I plan on using the car as a weekend cruiser and would like to have the torque for some fun. All i have is a 2 peice rear main 350 block with a standard 4 inch bore. Any advice on good heads to use would be awesome since this is my first engine build.

Re: 388 stroker ?
Cool thanks, the block was good , he bought it from a jy, for 250 bucks and planned on rebuilding it. Started to take it apart and everything was new lol. Should he do a 360 instead and leave the 388 alone? He's trying to save money so trying to avoid buying new pistons

Re: 388 stroker ?
He pulled it apart to rebuild it last winter. He planned on stroking it so he sold the crank to someone Idk I didn't ask. Is have to check but the heads that were on it needed new valve seals and were around 76 cc . Mid 70s heads. His brother works at the jy so he can get the vortecs heads cheap. They used the motor in the "yard" truck and sold it bc they were tired of trying to get it to stay running. That's probably why he got it so cheap and why he planned on a rebuild. While its already in pieces why not go bigger or make better? Lol

Re: 388 stroker ?
It was rebuilt at some point in time it is now a 360 but looks like the just ported out the stock heads and used the crank for something else. Guess the plan is flat tops with vortecs heads maybe mild exhaust porting . Any idea on some healthy cams? Probably a rpm intake?
