Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
I assume by "12 to 1" you mean compression ratio. The cam doesn't determine static CR.
What induction system do you have? Carb? TPI? ???
The main things you have to consider with Vortec heads are: intake manifold type (needs to be Vortec-specific); self-aligning rocker arms (unless you convert to guide plates); and how much lift you have at the valve (Vortec heads are limited to ~.440-.480" lift, and the valve springs aren't up to aftermarket cams).
Assuming you have a carburetor, and a cam with a powerband somewhere between 1500-6500 RPMs, this kit is a great deal, good for .575" lift at the valve:

If you don't know if it's a Vortec intake manifold, then it's about a 99.9999992% probability you don't have a Vortec intake manifold.
And, therefore, I stand by the kit I linked.
