Ok guys... pulling the 305 out today, ?s about 350

I am pulling the 305 out of my 1989 Iroc vert today. I will buy either a gm 305 or 350 crate motor.

I have doen some reading, and it looks like I can use the 350 if I change the sprk control module, knock sensor, and prom. Injectors on it now are the 19lb from SouthBay, some articles say I can use those if prom is programmed for them, others say I need the 22lb injectors. Looking to leave all of the stock TPI/computer crap in place.

Should I do this or just stick with the 305 replacement? I really don't care about hp but it looks like costs will be about the same if I go with the 350.

Suggestions?

The 350 I am looking at is this one http://www.crateenginedepot.com/350-...10014C944.aspx

While that engine would "work", I wouldn't recommend it. For one, it's about $500 overpriced. It goes downhill from there.

Take a look at these guys: http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/...43112154432.26

Two of my brothers got rebuild 350s from them, one almost 8 years ago, no problems with it. I've mentioned them on TGO before, no complaints that I'm aware of. Specify 083 heads and roller lifter cam (which were stock for an L98). Add the core charge and shipping to the price (the engine you linked doesn't include shipping).

19 lb injectors will work for "normal" driving. Under full power, they will be maxed out on a 350, and may go lean. That's why 22 lb injectors are recommended for 350s. You can use the 305 PROM, but it would probably run a little better with a 350 PROM (and knock sensor, and injectors).

Re: Ok guys... pulling the 305 out today, ?s about 350

I am in the same boat (well car) as the original poster. I have an '87 IROC with a near dead 305 TPI. I want to replace it with a crate 350.
Got a beginner question: can just about any 350 crate engine be used with my 305 TPI psetup? or does it have to be a TPI specific engine?
I realize some things might have to be changed.

Does anyone have any other links or suggested places to buy one? looking to spend around $2000-2500 for the motor. Then will pay my mechanic to install it.
Thanks for any help

The year on a TPI matters but not engine size. As far as a rebuilt engine goes, you can get quality ones for a lot less than that. My shortblock is from these guys and has survived a summer of fooling around a bit and a full day's dyno flog w/no problems:

Quality, good price, no core, quick/reasonable shipping.

Thanks for the info! I like the prices at Mabbco Motors, will discuss it with my mechanic buddy. Will probably go with the 350 basic long block 1987-1995.
Anyone know if my '87 intake and TPI from my 305 engine will work with that motor?
I know from reading on tpiparts.com that i will have to change a few things around, but in general will this work?

It'll work. The TPI hardware didn't change between 305 and 350 except for the injectors.

When you order, make sure you specify TPI heads (casting number ends in 083). Don't let them shove off TBI heads on you (much more common than TPI heads).

Thanks for the info five7kid. Is it safe to assume that my factory 305 is a 2-bolt main? Weren't most/all of them?

Weren't the factory 350s 4 bolt mains? The engine listed on that website is a 2 bolt main.

Vettes and trucks got 4-bolt mains. F-bodies got 2-bolt mains.
