Opinions on this engine?

Would any of you buy this engine to replace an L69 in an 84 Z28? How easy of a swap would it be? Will my current accessories work with it?

Thanks

Re: Opinions on this engine?

I wouldn't, no. I'd never go through that much expense and work for so little improvement. Despite what that motor is rated for, in reality I doubt that it makes more (or even as much) power as a stock L69.

$2k should get you a rebuilt L31 and used vortec 4bbl intake if you shop carefully. If not, I'd buy a used L31 and put it in the car while I saved money for a rebuild.

It's advertised as 8.5:1, but it's really 8.0:1. It will want at least a 2400-stall torque converter and a 3.42:1 axle. It will make 290 HP at the crankshaft, IF you top with an RPM AirGap, and use headers and 3" exhaust. But what you're buying is an overpriced Goodwrench 350 with a really wrong cam. Better to just get the Goodwrench 350, add Comp's 12-305-2 cam, and still be $300 ahead. Then you can use a 2000-stall torque converter. This will make for a more enjoyable daily-driver. If you want the 290-HP version, then put your #416 heads on it with FelPro 1094 steel-shims. I'd rather go with the 12530282 or the 12530283, depending on whether you care about 4-bolt main caps.

Be aware, no fuel pump rod hole (probably true with the JY L31 as well).

Otherwise, with the noted intake manifold change, and a 1-piece RMS flexplate, your accessories will bolt up.
