first engine swap!

so sooner or later my 300k mile old 305 tpi is going to give out on me. so im thinking i should start prepareing for it now by begining the build of a 350 now. basicly my goal is to have around 300hp. it is my daily driver.

here the car rite now.
1990 firebird formula
-305 TPI stock
-700r4 (rebuilt)
-2.73 rear

so basicly i need all of your help.i want to know what all would need to be done to achive this goal.
i can get a stock 350tpi out of a 90 camaro with 75k on it for 200$. but it doesnt have a oil pan or intake/tpi set up.
so what all can i use from my existing 305 on the 350 if anything.
what are your set ups

Re: first engine swap!

You would be able to use everything except need a 350 knock sensor and need a 350 prom for the computer.

Re: first engine swap!

you will also need a set of 22#hr injectors. You might want to contact southbayfuelinjectors for there bosch 3's.

Re: first engine swap!

For HP gains, start with headers/exhaust, a tune, and porting intake, plenum, runners. If you're going for ETs, a new gear like 3.42/3.73 will work wonders over the 2.73.

Why do you say that? The 305 I removed from my '82 Berlinetta ran great before I removed it with over 304k miles on it. No smoke, didn't use excessive amounts of oil, passed smog test with flying colors. I didn't find anything wrong with it, and it was the original unopened engine for the car (intake and valve covers had been replaced, that's as far as it had ever been pulled apart).

You'll need a better excuse for swapping in a 350 than that.

Re: first engine swap!

Just finishing up the same swap. 305 tpi to 350 tpi. I was looking for the same hp goals as well. I've got headman headers and y pipe with fully ported slp runners, plenum, and manifold base. A new set of plugs and wires too. The porting work was done by high flow fuel injection. Look him up on facebook if you can. He does amazing work but the turn around time is like 3 weeks so send your stuff out sooner then later I you go this route. I was also under the impression I needed a 350 esc. I ended up buying one. Do a search on here and you might find more info on it. I think some 1.6 rockers would be a good idea too if your keeping your stock cam. And I don't know tooich about automatic transmissions but everyone here says buying a torque converter is like the top 5 mods that should be done to an auto car.

I have seen 305's last only 50,000 miles or over 500k miles. It seems for some it was a roll of the dice. However any I seen at 300k that seemed good were destined to make 400k miles as the vehicles were being driven alot and not just sitting. The trucks is where I seen most of the short lived 305's but plenty lasted well over 250k even in the trucks.

I must agree that condition of the motor is more important than mileage.
