New engine build....how much power?
Hey guys,
I decided to scrap the TPI engine and start a rebuild on a new 350 block. I was wondering how much power I'll be putting out.
- early 1970's 4 bolt main 350 block
- D-shaped pistons
- Dart aluminum heads http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DRT-127322/
- aggressive cam (.531/.542 lift) - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-CT108
- 750 Holley Carb
- Not really sure what intake manifold, but something to match up with the RPM range of the cam.
I'm guessing I should be pushing out well over 400HP...maybe close to 450HP?

I would say closer to 400. Since you're starting from scratch, ditch the idea of the early 70's junk and get a newer one piece rear main seal, factory roller cam block. The hydraulic roller will make more power everywhere with a less aggressive cam. Fwiw, I built a 355, Dart Pro 1 heads, rpm airgap, 230/236 .520/.540 hyd roller cam, 750 Holley, and tuned with a wide band air fuel guage. Good, solid build and put down 330hp, 350tq at the wheels.

The D shaped pistons are going to give you horrible compression...which is going to make the way too big cam seem even bigger. Ditch the pistons and do what you need to do to get 10.5:1 compression (flat tops and mill the heads to 60cc). Then, the other parts will yield your 400HP (probably closer to 425). For an intake, I would look to an RPM Airgap and some 1 5/8" headers into a 3" collector.
