350 swap

I know there have been a million and one threads about 350 swaps, I'm not quite sure where to look for my particular issue.

First, I have a 1984 Camaro with a 350 in it currently, this engine has a 2 peice rear main seal, as a NWC Borg Warner T5 with a 6 bolt 153 tooth flywheel. Currently I am assembling another 350 that came out of a 1998 Chevy Express Van (3500), this motor has a 1 piece rear main seal, and was mated to an automatic 460LE trans. Though I do not have the engine in front of me, I believe that the crankshaft output has a 7 bolt pattern, I am wondering what I should do about getting the correct clutch for this engine? Will my existing clutch work? Any information is greatly appreciated. I am aware I may have to address a pilot bushing issue, if the crank does not have provisions for a pilot bearing what options do I have? I have yet to take the crank out, nor have I inspected it, but these issues came to mind and am wondering how they can be resolved.

Thanks for your replies,
Colby

Re: 350 swap

Late SBC crank also has 6 bolts but in a different bolt pattern to suit the 1 pce RMS ;prevents people putting the wrong balance flywheel / flexplate on the wrong engine

First up you will need to find a 153 tooth flywheel to suit a 1 pce RMS crank

and most likely your existing clutch work on that just like on your present one

Re: 350 swap

a standard flywheel, and clutch set, from a later camaro with one piece RMS should work just fine. your clutch set may actually work, but if I remember correctly, they slightly differ in diameter.

Re: 350 swap

The clutches are identical. No difference whatsoever, in diameter or anything else, between 1-pc & 2-pc RMS applications.

Just get a flywheel for a 86-up 305 TPI (Camaro/Firebird w VIN code F). Nothing fancy, special, or unusual required at any time.

Don't forget to put a pilot bearing or bushing in the crank.

Re: 350 swap

I really didn't see why they would be any different, but for some reason I thought the autozone website showed they were, seems like it was just a fraction of a difference though, but its good to know they interchange

a few months ago I helped my brother do the opposite conversion in his 89 rs, when he swapped his car over to 5 speed it had an older 350 with the 2 piece rms, but the trans and everything was out of another 89 rs, and a flywheel for an older camaro worked like a charm, but I wasn't sure on the clutch, becuase he just bought a new one while it was apart
