swapping my 305 TPI for a 350 TPI

Hey guys,

first off i wanna say i have never rebuilt or swapped an engine before but its something i really want to do, and it gives me a chance to repainted my engine bay too.

So heres the story, ive got an 87 GTA with a 5.0 TPI, and a friend of mine has an 87 GTA with a 5.7 in it........or he did until he span it on a corner and wrote the car off anyway, the engine is totally fine and hes offered me it for quite cheap.

Theres a couple of things im wondering. Obviously i want to replace lots of parts on the engine while its out of a car, but once its all back together is it just a straight swap for my engine and thats it ? im thinking i would have to put his ECU in. And is my fuel pump ok for a 5.7 engine ? ive heard the injectors are 22lb ones as opposed to 19lb ones in a 5.0, so does the fuel pump need replaced too ?

Im not going for mega horse power, but i will want to put some good parts in it, i might aswell if im going to rebuild it. Any advice on that would be great as ive never rebuilt anything before.

The engine has only done 68 thousand miles and he said the car ran great before the crash, so it doesnt really need rebuilt as it is, but im planning on keeping my Trans Am for as long as humanly possible.

You will just need to keep the injectors he has on the engine and the memcal chip in the ecm is removable they both use the 1227165 ecm.

Cool, sounds pretty straight forward then !

Ive got another option now too, he bought a brand new Edelbrock intake manifold before xmas as he was going to swap the TPI for Carb and he will give me that too ! choices choices....

I changed mine from the 305 to 350. Everything bolts right up. Stick with the TPI.

The factory used the same pump for 305 and 350 TPI. If the 350 is stock, the stock 305 pump will be fine.

However, if the pump fails (well, should probably say "when the pump fails"), that would be the time to upgrade.

Re: swapping my 305 TPI for a 350 TPI

yeah thats what i was thinking, never had any issued with it before, i think its the cars original as theres no access hole been cut in behind the rear seats, unless someones replaced it properly at some point in my cars life.

Can you guys tell me what would be ideal to replace with an engine out of the car? its low mileage and ran great but im planning on keeping my car forever, but i havnt got a ton of cash to pour into the engine all at once.

should i do the head gaskets and all other gaskets assosiated with the TPI unit itself ? timing chain set etc ?

Also, are there any reasonably priced cams etc that will be a bit better than the stock one, as i said in a previous post im not looking for big power gains or anything, just something thats got a nice pull when the mood takes me.

my car has already got a full stainless exhaust system and a set of hooker 2460's on
