Stealth Ram 383

Hey there guys. A few of you know I've been undergoing my first build for awhile now, and there's finally a light at the end of the tunnel.

****WARNING**** This thread will contain a LOT of pictures!

Back story: About 6-7 months ago on my way home from school I was pulled over (got out of the ticket, cop was very interested in my car) after speaking for about 10-15 when I was getting on the bridge to go home my RPM's shot from about 2-5k, and would not hit 3rd. by the time I got home in the city the car would not go into 3rd. and was slipping horribly. So while I was waiting to acquire a new 700r4 I was given a LT1 cam from my co workers 96 Z28. I started purchasing parts to swap the new Tranny, and cam when I decided the gains the LT1 cam would net me wouldnt come close to what I was expecting. therefore I decided to stay true to my "GO BIG OR GO HOME" method.

to date Ive acquired the following

062 Vortec heads
Alexs Parts .550 "ghetto grind Retainers" and springs, cut valve stems, Teflon valve seals, and hardened push rods
1.52 Pro Magnum RR's
Edelbrock Vortec TPI intake
SLP Runners
24lb Injectors
Southbay AFPR & Diaphragm
Lunati 60121 Cm .515 int/ .530 Exh
scat 383 crankshaft
Speedpro 383 Flat top 2v relief pistons
2300 Torque converter
MSD Streetfire Dizzy, ignition box w/ rev limiter, and an ignition coil.
8mm taylor wires
BBK Pulleys
corvette servo.
ARP connecting rod bolts, intake bolts, cylinder head bolts
new lifters, cloyes timing chain, all new sensors, oil pump gaskets, 160 thermo. I sure theres more but off top I cant remember..its been a LONG 6 months!

But without further adieu I give to you my attempt at a high revving 383 Vortec TPI.

comments and input are welcome!!!!

***ALSO*** Sorry for all the posts...I didnt feel like uploading every single pic to photbucket and linking them.

Re: Light at the end of the tunnel! High revving Vortec 383 TPI build.

1.) Heres the Vortec Intake I picked up from a fellow member here on TGO got the intake and runners from him for a great price. (Rock861261) It was a little dirty when I got it as you can tell..
2.)After a quick bath in purple power and some tooth brush love she was getting there.
3.) Also this bolt was the reason I decided to go with a Vortec top end. The star key stripped out the bolt. After a week of failed attempts my buddy snapped the edge of the intake manifold off. Figured "ehh might as well get an aftermarket intake now"

Re: Light at the end of the tunnel! High revving Vortec 383 TPI build.

a few weeks ago I wanted something to do seeing as I was waiting on funds so I decided the TPI was in need of some polishing, and painting. decided to strip off the black and blue paint scheme. I previously decided on. Chrome and Blue under the hood will be the final result

Also have my pcmforless stroker chip on order. Ill also be posting upates while I finish up my little odds and ends stuffs I have going on. Feel free to chime In guys.

Re: Ported Vortec 383 TPI build.

A not so good news update: recieved a phone call earlier today from the machince shop. They finished the over bore of the block and proceeded to press in the cam bearings I provided. Apparently the box of cam bearings I purchased was missing the number one bearing. They checked the scrap pile and no 2 whole number one cam bearings where present . Sooo they went ahead and pressed in the set of cam bearings they had. The other WONDERFUL news was that my brand new scat 383 crank had to be balanced with the Mallory metal raising the final cost of my total from roughly 500 to 800!!! Was not expecting that at all. So the completion date was pushed back for now.

can anyone explain the process of using Mallory alloy to balance a crankshaft? I've never heard of it before.

but on the bright side I finished porting the edelbrock vortec intake. I'll post some pics up later of the final product.

You can balance the crank for a 350 balancer to show under the bay a stocker. Or you can balance for a 400.. Yes 300.00 is what they charge.
You should have the 400 adapter that fits on the back of the crank block. It's a performance adapter for a stroker.

Re: Ported Vortec 383 TPI build.

Depends on the bob wt used as to how much Mallory metal is needed.Sounds like they are trying to make this a internal balanced engine which from our point of view is a better performance combo.

the crank specified it was for an internal balanced engine? If I would have known the overall cost I would have bought a balanced eagle kit.

Re: Ported Vortec 383 TPI build.

Most of the Scat 1 pc RMS 3.75" stroke crank ive balanced usually need a slug in the rear. Ive balanced them all as the factory did (ext on the rear, internal on the front. 300$ seem's really high to install mallory, We normally charge 60$ a slug to install(includes welding them) + the cost of the mallory. How many slugs did the install

Thats not a guarantee that it will be perfectly balanced either. Seen balanced kits still need some work. You did right by having all your components balanced together. $300 is about goin rate, and while seems pricey, its well worth it. Now for a lower rpm build it may not be as critical to have a high level of balance accuracy and maybe the factory balanced kits would have sufficed. But atleast you can rest your head knowing your bottom end is done properly

Re: Ported Vortec 383 TPI build.

@IrocZ442: It is being balanced with the 350 Damper. although under the bay wont really suggest stock. lol

@five7kid: Thank you. I guess I guess I could have done that

@1986Z28OWNER: Thats what I thought when I was told the price...When I recieved the cal to explain what needed to be done I didnt really have much time to talk, and wasnt in the best of moods so the news that an additional $375 was needed to finish I was kinda taken back. We didnt really get into it very much. when I pick up everything Ill be able to elaborate further on what was done.

@Orr89RocZ: I guess your right. I do plan on taking it to 6k, so better safe than sorry.

Was the previous owner of the intake using it on regular style bolt pattern heads? The reason I ask is because in the pictures the intake has 12 bolt holes, vortec intakes and heads only have 8 bolts.

I just noticed the same thing. The intake in the pics is definitely not a vortec intake. It has 12 holes w the center holes made for TBI and old style heads, but not vortec heads.

I would sell the base you have and get a vortec base. You have a lot into the vortec heads already, you might not get much money back out of them.

I listed them both. I'd like to keep the heads but i guess we'll see what happens. I really don't want to port another intake lol that took some patience.

Me and you are in the same boat. Trying to sell Vortecs that have a lot of money an labor in port work 3 angle etc.

If your Tpi base is nicely ported an you sell the heads. That's probably better.

But if you cant a Vortec base be the way to go an port it. So no matter what you have port work to do. Good Luck

that's what I was thinking. However I haven't really seen many pictures or flow data of ported stealth rams. I'd like to see what I'm working with. I also don't want to outflow my heads. I'm kinda worried that the 062's(alexs parts springs and retainers. And cut valve stems, pro mag 1.52 rockers) are going to hold me back as is.

Re: Ported Vortec 383 TPI build.

I ran a best of 12.5, consistent 12.7s with my stock heads on my 355. It had some more in it too, if you look at my post "vortec info". You can see pics of the intake stock and ported.

very nice. have you noticed a difference once you switched to the AFR Vortecs?
also would you happen to have an audio clip?

Only made one pass so far and the car picked up some, ran into some issues with the transmission leaking. It's pulling harder up top now, it wants more gear than the 3.75's that are in it now but with the th350 I'm not going any lower.

That's a video of the first fire-up, the heads or the intake porting didn't change the sound.

oh my lanta! If my car sounds anything close to that I'll be a happy dude. But I think I'm going to ride out these 062's for awhile and see how they do. Got the rods and pistons in today along with the timing chain I'll try to get more pics up tomorrow after I drop the heads on.

Re: Vortec Stealth Ram 383 (Formerly Ported TPI)

Should sound close, your cam is a little bit smaller, probably could go to 1.6 rockers and make up the difference. What headers are you running? I wish I swapped out my crank for a stroker at the time, I would be in the 11's already. I bought someone out of their project while the parts were still at the machine shop, would have been the perfect time. Your project is definitely coming along nice, GL with the build. The 062's should work well for you I only went for the AFR's since I sold my 406 and had the extra cash.

Re: Vortec Stealth Ram 383 (Formerly Ported TPI)

originally I had 1.6's to put on a stock LT1 cam to pick it up a little then i decided to go with the alexs parts springs which only cleared to .550 lift and this cam with 1.6 rockers was slightly over that(dont remember exact numbers) hopefully I see low 12's atleast that way I can justify the amount of time and money ive put into this

Re: Vortec Stealth Ram 383 (Formerly Ported TPI)

Ahh gotcha, I just gave the specs of my cam to the guy I had redo my heads. Only problem I had was the springs he installed were too weak to control the cam. I bought the replacement springs but never installed them, went straight to the AFR's with the 8019's. The XFI lobes beat up the valvetrain pretty good. I think you should be in the low 12's easy. What gears, tire size are you running?

Re: Vortec Stealth Ram 383 (Formerly Ported TPI)

I'm still gunna run the stock 3.23 gears and r4 with the vette servo and 2300 torque converter. Atleast until I grenade them both then I'll probably bump it up to 4.42-73 gears. And possibly a t56 or a built r4. Hopefully I'll be in the marine corps by then and I'll be able to do the t56.

also I've been considering a few options on tires found a pair of 2654516 kunho for the rear or I might pick up a set of extra GTA's and a set of mt radials for when I feel like throwing down.

Re: Vortec Stealth Ram 383 (Formerly Ported TPI)

If you keep a 26" tall tire a 3.73/3.89 should be pretty good probably get you through the traps around 6-6500. That cam would like a higher stall too if you haven't bought it yet.
