Yup, 86 was the last year of the older style heads.

Re: 86 tpi setup on a crate motor with old style heads

Physically fit yes. But if it is an older engine with flat tappet lifters, the tapping of the lifters can create havoc with the knock sensor. Plus the cam lobes can be difficult to tune for EFI, since it probably was designed for a carburetor, depending on what cam is in the older engine.

Which engine are you getting? Might have to choose a different engine or swap the cam & lifters out if you choose one with a cam that is not EFI friendly.

It will work fine. Flat tappets don't make any more noise than the roller tappets if they are working correctly. You might want to get a tune once you get it in and running.

Re: 86 tpi setup on a crate motor with old style heads

That's about the minimum thing that qualifies as "engine". Part # for part #, it's a duplicate of the 160 HP wonders of the mid 70s; deep-dish low-compression pistons, 993 heads (about 8.2:1 compression with that combo), 929 cam (194°/204° @ .050" more or less, .390"/.410"). All the very best ingredients for guaranteed NOT performance. It's intended as a service replacement for fleets; something to get a commercial vehicle back on the road and earning revenue as cheeeeeeeply as possible while still having a factory warranty. Think "phone company van".

TPI will work fine on it, as far as bolting up and all that. All that crap about flat-tappet cams is just that, crap; that's what your 86 motor came with.

Just don't expect miracles... it'll have 45 more CID of grunt, but probably no more HP than your LB9 had. Probably still won't be able to pass a semi on a 2-lane road. Might even be worse about that than before.

You will however need a different flex plate, as your 86 has the late-model 1-pc rear main seal type, but that phone company van motor has the 2-pc type.

Re: 86 tpi setup on a crate motor with old style heads

Arguably the 2nd worst cam choice in the universe for that motor; surpassed in unsuitability only by its next bigger brother, aka "the RPM cam", which has the same int lobe but the next larger exh lobe in that family. (244° @ .050", .510" lift)

Even its very own ad copy clearly states

lopey idle, mid-upper rpm power. Requires 9.5:1 and higher compression, 2,800+ stall, and gearing
Total mismatch to a 8:1 motor, TPI, and any kind of stock gears.

According to blueprintengines.com, for that engine they say, "MUST USE 1987-1995 INTAKE MANIFOLD".

Doesn't sound like it.

You can elongate the center two intake base mount bolts on each side.

Or, trade your base for an '87-up base. I'm sure there are people out there who would gladly trade you.
