If i had to guess without being there i would say the starter is on it's way out. Could it be vapor locking though is also something to look into.

Google SBC "hot start " problem ;
a well documented problem ,heat soak of the starter solenoid ,

As t-top havoc notes ,a remote solenoid usually solves it

Might want to be careful there. A permanent magnet starter turns into a generator when the engine starts. With the bus bar between the battery cable and solenoid terminal (for the remote solenoid), it'll keep the starter solenoid engaged.

Re: 406 sbc no hot start

when my truck did this, it was the starter ... and i think he asked about turning it over by hand to see if things (like the rings) were getting to tight when it was up to temp

Re: 406 sbc no hot start

I have used a stock starter on my 406 for 9 years without a single problem. I started with a single wrap over the starter and solenoid/ When it got brittle, I put on a new one but just put it over the original. I also have SLP 1 3/4 inch headers on it. I did have a problem like yours on my 90 IROC. After 3 starters in 2 weeks, I found it was a wiring problem. The previous owner removed an alarm system and had a short wire. He spliced in a wire, but it was a lighter gage and would not carry the load when it got hot. Replaced it and no problems for the last 15 years.

Re: 406 sbc no hot start

I run a small flex plate and a stock 96ish corvette mini starter.
Haven't had 1 start issue in 10 years. I even have 1 (coated) hooker super comp header tube that lays on the starter.
It's cheap and easy to rebuild these if it ever needs it.
