305 truck motor
Could this engine be an alternative replacement for the L03?...
12530284 - NEW GM 1996 - 2002 5.0L, 305 CID, 8 Cylinder Engine
It's rated at 230 h.p./285 lb/ft., has a better cam and heads, and seems like a good alternaative for the L03. I relaize it's a truck motor but it has 60+ h.p. and 30+ lb/ft. over the L03. Plug and play with reprogramming, or is it a big headache?

Re: 305 truck motor
The best L30 (Vortec 305 '96-'00) heads are no better than the best LB9 heads. They just take the Vortec intake manifolds. And some L30s actually have swirl-port Vortec heads. No better than LO3 heads. You won't see the power increase without improving your entire exhaust system, and if you're staying TBI you'll also need the GMPP / Edelbrock Vortec TBI intake manifold if you want all 230 HP. But it won't be 230 HP if what arrives is the swirl-ports. You'll have to verify what you get, if you do this. And you may end up needing to change both injectors. Not sure if yours flow enough.

Sounds like an L30...the 305 to the popular L31 350. They are Vortec motors, and run pretty well.
When you say plug and play...is that with the truck induction system, or your TBI? I would not think the L30 would make the same horsepower with a TBI that it does with its original induction system.

The L30 / L31 intake manifolds don't really build any extra output anywhere in the RPM range, versus a Performer, because the runner lengths end up about the same. Go pop the plastic upper off the aluminum lower and you'll understand. TBI itself is not inherently restrictive at the 230 HP level, if you ditch the LO3 / LO5 production intake manifold.

Thanks Atilla.
I don't consider the concept of TBI to be any more restrictive than a carb., and you can make obscene amounts of H.P. with a carb.
I just wasn't sure what the factory TBI pieces were good fro, H.P.-wise.
And a Performer, adapter, and TBI unit will all fit under a stock hood?
If I were to every upgrade the engine, an L31 is a likely candidate for me. I love the on in my 5500lb. Suburban (255hp rating). If it can make that move with 25' trailer in tow, I'm sure it could get my T/A down the road nicely.
Hope I did not drag you too far off topic, jbv. What is the price difference for you between the L30 and L31? Nothing wrong with 45 extra cubes.

Re: 305 truck motor
What adapter? GMPP sells a Vortec TBI manifold that is actually from Edelbrock. It exists only to put TBI on '96-up Vortec heads. I'd spend the extra for an L31, but that wasn't the question.
