Need help with a few simple swap questions.
Need help with a few simple swap questions.
So... I have a 92 RS Heritage edition. I have already acquired a T-5 but im having motor issues..Its TIRED! so instead of buying the flywheel and what not for the 305 I'm investigating using my buddies 87 vortec 350 he just offered up. He has just redone the heads but it needs a new bottom end. that's all fine and dandy but I don't have an intake or throttle body or any of that stuff....
So what I'd like to know is how much of the 305 gear is useful on a 350 block and heads?
Also what about the ECU in a situation like this?
It'll be fairly stock for this summer I'm sure but I'm just looking for information at the moment to get it on the road. Thanks.

Re: Need help with a few simple swap questions.
The "Vortec" motor was introduced in 96.
Highly unlikely your friend's motor is a "Vortec". More likely, it's a TBI 350, aka L05.
More info about "the" 305 would be helpful. I assume this is the original L03 (TBI motor) that came in it. If so, a TBI 350 will be as near identical to it as possible; no more different than another of the same TBI 305 you have now.
Usual cheeeeep and eeeeeezy way out in that situation, is to get the chip, TB, knock sensor, and ESC module out of a TBI 350 vehicle.

Yes you are correct. It is the stock 305 that it came with. I thought he said vortec but I guess for now it doesn't matter. But I'm curious... what is the chip and ESC you refer to? Where are these located?
I also assume my intake manifold and other front features will work fine? Then just bolt in?
Would changing the injectors in the TB the same difference or are they physically different?
You rule!

Re: Need help with a few simple swap questions.
Chip = installed in the ECM, which is behind the pass side of the dash
ESC = on the firewall sort of behind the distributor
Yes all that other stuff will bolt up to a TBI 350 exactly the same as a TBI 305. The 2 motors are identical externally in every way. Only difference is internal.
Easier to swap the whole TB; but yes it would be possible, if more work and trouble, to take 2 TBs apart and put only 1 back together.
