882 heads?

I recently bought an 0010 block out of a 70 Caprice for $90. The block included 882 heads which will definitely need machined. Now i know as far as performance goes, 882's are very restrictive and prone to cracking in high performance applications. I'm looking to get no more than 350-400hp out of my setup. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the stock 0010 setup with 882's were only 250hp.

My question is this; would these 882 heads allow me to get to that magic number in terms of practicality and price? I realize it would take a lot of other upgrades, but I'm just seeing if 882's are cost effective and reliable for the application I am wanting.

I am on a budget, so if these aren't worth using, then I would use them as a core for vortecs down the road. I realize Vortecs are like a religion to some people, but I am on a tight budget. Thanks!

Re: 882 heads?

Throw them away and buy some aftermarket heads. Even cast iron Dart Sportsman heads are a better option but an aluminum head is very affordable.

Re: 882 heads?

882's will not get you there with out alot of port work, valve size increase, and other mods. At that point you could have bought better heads and came out cheaper.

The only production heads that has a shot at 350-400 HP with out a lot of work to them are old 461, 462, etc double hump heads, L98 alum heads, vortec heads

Re: 882 heads?

big 76cc's and crack prone. low compression unless you do a stroker or pop-up pistons.
i wouldnt waste a penny on them.

however theyre great for learning how to port, door stops and boat anchors.

use adjustable guildplates as one of the valves is moved .030 from stock , just cant rember if it was the intake or ex side
400 for the pair shipped bare and will cost 2-400 for the rest of the parts depending on which route u go
they flow really good out of the box

Have you had good luck with these? What parts did you use to build them up? Looks tempting, thanks!

I'm really looking into these now. It'll probably be a while, but I have them bookmarked for when the time comes. Thanks a lot man.
