mini starter and flywheel teeth question

i have a 400 sbc with a 153 tooth flywheel externally balanced. i want to run a mini gear reduction stater on my car because the stock one is too big and runs too close to my headers and causes hot start issues. my 400 is drilled to run either a staggered or strait bolt starter. but all the mini starters have 11 tooth gears and my stock starter only has 9. will the 11 tooth mini starer still match up with my 153 tooth flywheel? meaning.... is the 11 tooth gear still spaced the same as my 9 tooth starter just with more teeth?

have you considered running the later model GM PMGR starter? price one for a 96ish Camaro.

Re: mini starter and flywheel teeth question

they're a standard unit available at most parts stores with a warranty

they're smaller and lighter than the original

they're likely less expensive than an aftermarket model of comparable quality

being a permanent magnet gear reduction starter, they're plenty strong

Is this just the factory style starter for those cars? Go to local parts store and ask for 96 Camaro starter?

Correct.

To go back to OPs question

The mini starters being discussed in this thread are often setup for both teeth types (153 and 168). Though this thread is old, for posterity's sake, just check the datasheet on the mini starter you're buying to confirm what flywheel it works with.

I am using a $50 one from dbelectrical and it's working great so far. No major hot start issues, yet.

Re: mini starter and flywheel teeth question

The mini starter I was running on my stock 305, works fine on my 383 as well; I had to use the other set of drilled bolt holes to mount it, but the teeth fit fine.

Re: mini starter and flywheel teeth question

if you're in the market, price the 96 camaro starter through RA. I've gotten a few of them there, although I've yanked a few of the off junkers in the yards.
