Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
Hi everyone, so, I swapped my 2.8 to a 305 carburated from a 1978. Now the power steering hose won't hook up to it. I don't want to switch everything to a serpentine belt so it has to go from standard, on the pump, to 18 metric, on the power steering gear box, and it's the pressure side so hose clamps will not suffice. Any ideas?
Do you have the power steering pump for both engines? If so look at the back of both of them where the pressure hose screws into pump.
You will see a large hex with threads inside it for hose.. That "hex" is a fitting. Take that fitting out of both pumps and swap them. Put the fitting out of the 2.8L pump into the '78 350's pump. Then your stock firebird pressure hose will screw into it.
The male threads on those fittings are the same on both, but the female threads are SAE on the 78 pump, and metric on the third gen pump fitting
Why come on here and ask a question if you are just going to dismiss a correct answer?
Just do it man.. Try it, I have done 50+ ps pumps this away. I'm running a 1971 monte carlo pump on my 1988 camaro with the stock 88 camaro pressure hose.
You are correct. The fittings on the hose is std. for the 78 and metric on the 88.
Ok, I will try to make this simple... The pump (not the line or the adapter fitting) on pressure side has pipe threads in it, then an "adapter" screws into the pump, then your hose screws into the adapter.
All of the sbc pumps has the same pipe fitting threads (male side of adapter), it's the female side of "adapter" that has diff sizes.
If you swap the "adapter", you get the correct type of female threads for your hose to screw into
Look at the pics below. See the "adapter" or fitting that your hose screws into... That adapter/fitting can be removed... The female side of that fitting is the std. and metric diff. Not the male side that screws into pump.
Take the big 1" or so nut loose on back of both pumps.. That is the adapter fitting, put the one from the 88 into the 78 pump
I apologize if you thought I was insulting your knowledge. I just wanted to make sure, instead of someone guessing. Thank you very much for the in depth response, it worked perfect. Thank you very much
