500 horsepower sbc preparations

OK first I would like to say this site is awesome so much useful information for these third gens so thank you to all who have put in the work over the years! I'm new to this and only last week purchased my first ever third generation 83 z28 it has a 350 in it I'm going to pull and put my 400 block that's been built to 500 horse that's a low estimate btw my question is what else will I need to do to make the able to handle the power I know I need a trans and rear gears but how important are the sub frame connectors will I twist the car without them? Will the stock rear end after a rebuild of course be able to handle the power? I'm just needing to know what I'm really getting myself into here thanks for reading any input will help

Definitely weld in sub frame connectors especially if it is a T-Top car. Trans probably won't last long depending on what's in it so plan on something new.I would look for a stronger rear end also. I'm running a Strange S60 but you could easily go with a 12 bolt, 9 inch or 8.8. Plan on new drive shaft also. Hope this helps. Congrats on the new toy.

What do you mean trying to run an exhaust under it?

These cars were made for a single 2.5" intermediate pipe. You can upgrade to 3". True duals for the HP level you say you have will be custom fabrication.

thank you for pointing that out I've also heard that the subframe connectors can get in the way of exhaust

A single 3" supports more power than people give It credit for. And there are single 4" kits available that fit well.

Re: 500 horsepower sbc preparations

Cubes like bigger exhaust. I like 3.5" singles or even 4" at the 500 hp + level for few more ponies but a good mandrel bent high flow straight thru muffler 3" setup could do it. Just not ideal

Subframes should be installed. Then basic bolt on suspension stuff. Lca's and brackets, good shocks and tires. Stronger trans and rear would be ideal.

Cooling system i would go with a 170-180 stat and fresh flushed stock rad and dual fan setup.
