355 ENGINE HELP NEEDED!!!!PLEASE

sup guys, im new to this site!...well i have a 84 TA, and its got the 305 in it...i dont want a 17sec car, so im swapping a 72 vette 355 into it in the spring. according to the guy im getting the engine from, he had this engine in a caprice wagon, and was pulling 15's at the strip. so im hopin for 13's with just the motor????????? its supposted to have like 270hp stock on the 72 vette. its been bored, port and polished, and rebuilt, it possible to get 300hp out of just that? and is 13's a dream from just a engine swap? i was also thinkin bout putting a differant carb on, but i need to pass emissions. so i was thinkin, keep the stock Qjet, and the ECM...this should be pleanty for what i wnat to do,, and i was told to get a "zz4" chip?? i heard you can run these Qjets on a 400ci motor and it will run fine...........well any comments, suggestions, anything???????????please give me some feed back on this. thanks guys!! long live the f-body

Welcome.

You won't get there just pulling the 305 and bolting a 350 in there. You need to address exhaust, air cleaner, and traction as well.

Headers, high-flow cat & cat back, and a good air cleaner like the dual-snorkel are needed to let the engine breathe (even a 305). After the power increase, you'll need to increase traction to be able to put the power to good use.

Also, the "conventional" approximate ET/weight is one tenth reduction per 100 pounds removed with the same power and traction. If the wagon ran 15.5, you'd have to weigh at least 1500 pounds less to run 13.99. I doubt that's the case, so the engine probably isn't making the power necessary to get your TA into the 13's.

Porting and polishing is effective, but the results are dependant upon what heads this was done to and how good of a job the person who did them did. A cam change can make a world of difference, though.

You don't really need that particular ZZ4 chip, but you'll probably get a better spark advance curve with something other than the stock LG4 chip. Look at the magazine articles by Steve Green on this board for an interesting project using the computer controlled q-jet on a 383.

Even if it doesn't get you into the 13's as-is, that 350 is still a good place to start. At least fix the exhaust and air cleaner, and you'll have a nice ride with that engine.

FWIW, with an open element air cleaner, slightly larger cat-back, timing advanced to 6 degrees base, and the trunk emptied, I ran 16.85's at 5800 foot Bandimere with my LG4. Haven't run it since the mods in my sig, though.
