Ls1 swap in 85 z28
What's up guys, I'm new to this site but figured it was the best place for my question. I wanted to swap and ls1/t56 into my 85 camaro. I originally was going to do it myself but due to a busy schedule and no use of a garage or shop I thought I would explore the possibility of having a shop do it. Does anybody on here know of any good shops that specializes in this sort of thing around the tri state area? I live in nyc, but will go to New Jersey or pa or anywhere that's not to crazy far. Appreciate the help thanks.

If you are building this as a daily driver for NY, there are no clear state law restrictions on whether a motor swap is allowed. Some might argue that whatever you put in it must meet the emissions standards in effect for that year and model car. Others might argue that many "smog control" devices must be visually present at time of inspection, irrespective of the date of manufacture of the car.
See https://dmv.ny.gov/brochure/new-york...ection-program
The federal issue is also worthy of consideration if you intend to daily-drive the car, or if you ever plan on reselling to someone who wants it as a daily driver.
See https://www.epa.gov/sites/production...ngswitch_0.pdf
I know this isn't directly responsive to your question. But, I still recommend that the legalities be considered for anyone considering motor replacement in a third gen.

The following emissions control devices are examined if the vehicle was originally manufactured with them:
Catalytic converter (CAT)
Exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR
Positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV)
Air injection system (AIS)
Evaporative emissions control (EVAP)
Fuel inlet restrictor (FIR)
Thermostatic air cleaner (TAC)

It should be noted that while EPA's policy allows engine switches as long as the resulting vehicle matches exactly to anv certified configuration of the same or newer model year as the chassis, there are some substantial practical limitations to performing such a replacement. Vehicle chassis and engine designs of one vehicle manufacturer are very distinct from those of another, such that it is generally not possible to put an engine into a chassis of a different manufacturer and have it match up to a certified configuration. Therefore, practical considerations will generally limit engine switches to installation of another engine which was certified to be used in that same make and model (or a "twin" of that make and model, e.g., Pontiac Grand Am and Oldsmobile Calais). In addition, converting a vehicle into a different certified configuration is likely to be very difficult, and the cost may prove prohibitive.

Well the motor that's in the car now isn't the original anyway, it's a carb Chevy 350 from something. But it's not my daily driver nor would be sold as one.

Professional shops with a lick of sense tend to avoid getting involved in these sorts of conversions, even if the subject vehicle is already mutilated.
