LS! swappers please come inside(seriously considering ls1 swap)

Alright i've read up all lot on the LS1 swap and i'm thinking it would be a really nice engine to swap into my car(305TPI just not cutting it anymore). But what i cant seem to find out is what these engines are running in our 3rd gen cars. I know that our cars are a little lighter then our 4th gen brothers but would a stock LS1 in a 91 run some low 13's or even dip into some 12's. And what about a cam swap and some exhaust, would that warrent a low 12 time slip. At the end of this summer i'll have all my suspension mods complete so traction shouldnt be an issue. Thanks a lot for any input, and any input from people who have done this swap would be very helpful.

THe LS1 stock is in itself pretty impressive...

Check out Speartechs project for a good idea of what its capable of.

http://www.speartech.com/track.html

Mine is moded quite a bit with a custom grind comp cam and comp cams valvetrain, ported heads, ect, ect... My only problem is the exhaust. With what I have I should get 375 at the wheels. When I go for a tubular K-member and some long tube headers I'll be looking at 400 at the wheels. Of course, tires and suspension are also a factor in what times you'll run.

Thanks a lot. About that k-member i was thinking of doing that since the engine will be out and will make things easier, but i've heard mixed opinions if LT would work with them. So i'm taking it your telling me that they will work. Cause if they did that would be awsome. One more thing if i droped a LS1 in and put in the TR 224/224 cam do you think i will be able to run 12's because thats my goal as of right now but i want to eventuly hit 11's.

Well at the moment the best K-member out there right now for a 3rd gen is from AJE Racing. The problem is that its not meant for the LS1 swap. So the mounts arent in the right place. I was thinking or either relocating the mounts or making a bracket to extend them forward so I could mount the LS1 properly. I heard tho, that Spohn is supposed to be releasing a K-member for 3rd gens especially for the LS1 swap. So I am going to wait and see what happens with that. Its supposed to be released this summer as far as I know.

And with that cam I think you'll hit 11's easy.

I am trying out a ProFab Racing's K member:

http://hstrial-vhouse.homestead.com/our_products.html

Chrome moly version, with coil over set-up. I was told that with Spohn's motor mounts it should be a clean installation.

Not sure about exhaust yet.

Does AJE have a website??

yea it will be very nice if spohn does come out with a tubuler k-member for the ls1 swap, plus you would shed even more weight which is always nice.

What is the cost of an LS1 complete with fuel injection, wiring harness, ECM, etc.?
I am considering the same swap in a 1991 RS 305.
Thanks

I got mine for 3K, thats the motor, FI, harness, all acc., air intake, ECM, and 4L60E. You can probably find them cheaper than that, but thats about the going price. Check on EBAY, theres a bunch of LS1's on there, or some of the sites on the top of this page.

Funny thing is, I got the RS for 1K.

I got mine for 850, but that was a longblock and without a trans... spent over 2K getting the parts I need anyway... with more to be spent before its totally finished... Its definatly not a cheap swap.

yea its defintaly not as cheap just just throwing in just a gen 1 350/383 but this is much cooler, and from what i read you can get a lot of power from these things with litte mods. Plus if you think of the gas money you will save with this swap is defintlay worth it in the long run. In like 5 years it will almost pay for itself compared to doing a 383 running 12's/11's.

Actually, I meant a new LS1 engine, not used or rebuilt.
What fuel pump are you guys running? From a TPI car?
Does the LS1 mate up to a '91 700R4 or am I looking at a trans change too?
Thanks

I dont know how much a brand new LS1 would cost, but I imagine it would be pretty high priced. I will be using a whole new fuel set-up, not sure just yet (the car had a v6), but I believe you can run the TPI fuel set up with a regulator set to 60 psi, at least thats what Speartech did with theirs. The old 700R4's will not work with the LS1's. The bellhousing is different, the 4L60E's bellhousing makes a complete circle with bolts all around the perimeter. Maybe somebody makes an adapter plate, but I havent seen or heard about one.

Does the 4L60E use the same Crossmember and mounting points as the 700R4?? I'm getting a Spohn Torque Arm w/ the 700R4 Crossmember built onto it...could I use this one for a 4L60E if I decide to do an LS1 swap?

Do you need to swap out the dash harness for an LS1 swap as well? What difficulties are there, besides notching the frame for the AC? I know you'd pull the whole ECM and harness. Does the LS1 computer and harness fit in the same spots? How about fuel lines? Do you need them on the passenger side? Any other concerns? If I do this, I'd be swapping from a 3.1 mpfi configuration.

For a brand new one from the dealer its 5800 but if you have a good friend or relative that works for GM with there GM discount you can get it for 3800. For the harness Speartech.com makes them so its just a plug and play thing. Go to the post at the top of the page "LS1 questions and answeres it should explain everything there." I'm still waiting to know if anyone has tried fitting LT with a tubuler K-member.

I have a as new as used can get ls1 for sale.

3000.00 long block out of an 02 B4C camaro. has less than 30 miles on it. It is sitting in a Gm crate box waiting to be shipped.
If interested.

Matter of fact I never saw my 02 camaro with the LS1 in it.
