Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
So over this warmer weather times in ohio i have gotten a little bit done on my 3rd gen but not much, i really would appreciate some help with where wires go or what they connect to, i really want to drive this car to my prom and school so if you know anything about wiring from a 305 and where to apply anything onto a 350 still carb with HEI Dist. really i just want the car to fire up and move, dont care for radio and little thing as of right now but just to get this thing moving.
Did you eliminate the ECM? A factory Service Manual will show all the wire colors and location for the main engine harness on the driver-side firewall...
really i just want to get the car running, so id like to know distributor wires, starter wires, and like ground wires and stuff like that, like i said i dont care for interior stuff yet id like to have headlights and taillights and turn signals but im fine without

Your question is too broad to answer. Are the original wiring harnesses still there? If you are looking for a step by step guide on how to wire your car, as mentioned previously, you really need the factory service manual and reference the wiring diagrams. It's worth picking up a service manual for this purpose, as well as it tells you everything else you need to know about your car. They are invaluable and are available used on EBay and Amazon.
If you have specific questions about specific wiring on your car (i.e. where does this purple wire connect?), take a picture, post it up and we will try to help.

If all you did was swap a 350 in place of a 305, you wouldn't have disconnected any wires for headlights & turn signals.
You need to connect the wires for Main Power (two red 10 gauge wires with fusible links that connect to the positive stud on the starter along with your battery cable), the Starter wire (purple 12 gauge wire connects to the "S" terminal on the starter), Temperature sending unit wire (usually dark green, 18 gauge wire connects to the sending unit on the driver-side cylinder head), Oil Pressure sending unit wire (tan or light brown, 18 gauge wire), Choke wire (many are blue, 18 gauge), Throttle Kicker wire (some are light green, 18 gauge), Ignition wire (pink 12 gauge wire connects to coil on distributor cap), Tachometer (white 18 gauge wire connects to distributor cap, V-6 had black wire), and Alternator wires (brown/brown with white stripe, with connector for alternator). You need a 10 gauge wire from the alternator output post to the positive side of the battery (should be a pigtail on the cable for this). Ground wires are usually always black.
factory harness is still being used, and ive been looking into getting a helms book but all are still far out past when my prom is. mostly like i said i just want distributor and starter wiring i feel like after i find that all out i can kinda firgure out where every thing else goes, only thing that really got removed was A/C in the car but i already labled and cut those wires
Without really being there and seeing what you have so far, it'll be tough for anyone here to help you. At least provide some pics with the areas you need help with. Start with one thing first and once you've verified/wired that and tested that, move on to the next issue. The wiring part is not something you want to rush.
T.L. gave you lots of info also.
I would save your money and rent a nice car for the prom. You certainly don't want to be stranded somewhere with your partner. Remember, you only get one prom and the goal is to have fun. That's my 2 cents.
Grandrising my fellow 3rdgen members. I知 doing this same swap and I致e got a lot of info from this thread and from T.L post but I just wanna make sure I知 in the right direction to have this fired today. T.L stated there were fusible links on the two main power but I didn稚 see them. I seen fusible links on two other red wires that looks like it maybe the fuel pump wires but not too sure. I知 gonna up some pics. Just any ideas anything I知 missing please let me know I知 in the garage now and would like to wrap it up. This is literally my last thing to do. Thanks in advance, Honcho

Probably be best to start your own thread instead of piggybacking on someone elses
