Where is my dream engine?

I want to find a decent LT1 or LT4 to build up, but I am stuck. Where should I be looking and for how much?

You specifically want an LT1/LT4 or do you think they make more power?

This isn't for my SC. I want to build a motor to do a land speed attempt, and the short runner length will give the perfect horsepower. I could do a TPI 350, but buying a Miniram would almost make-up the cost of the whole engine.

I just dont know where to look! (?)

Hmmmm.... I don't know if you'd like to know that but Bill Grant is building a 2500 hp engine on a 28 pound tube chassis to do a world speed record, is car is pulling 4 g of accelaration...0-100 mph in 1 sec. !

hard to beat !

You're joking..... right???? I would say your aspirations have outrun your capabilities and knowledge base. You'd do best to hook up with a group doing the same thing and start learning from them.

What speed are you going to attempt?

Forgot about this post.

I would not try to attempt to break the self-propelled mod vechicle world record. Hmmmm... Lengthen, channel, 2000 hp achohol motor. Nah, to much work. BTW, it does not matter the weight of your vechicle in a land speed car, so it seems redundant to build a tube frame chassis.

I want some thing that I can build to 700-800 hp, (or at least 600) to throw in a specially preped Firebird. Lengthy project, but I want to attain 250 mph, (but, maybe, with different gearing pull 10s in the quarter.) Could do it easily with the LS1, but the LT1 would need some finessing.

But I need a motor first! Any suggestions?

PS- I am not an idiot (re- the speed record)

Well i'm no expert on the subject, but I would say get yourself either engine and twin turbo it. Drop the compression ratio, some high octane fuel (maybe aviation fuel), and run like 8-10 pounds of boost. Lingenfelter is getting ~650 hp from those new corvettes with twin turbos on them, i think he's only running like 6 pounds of boost.

250 mph hmm, i would guess you would need over 800 hp to power through the air. Might want to do some aerodynamic modifications too.

Heres what you want, low compression 502 with an ATI intercooled supersharger strapped on. I've seen these motors put out 1000hp.

As for 250mph, that's tough in a stock bodied car. Lingenfelter got a trans-am to 298mph but it took him 1400 hp to get it there. The sledgehammer could do 254.7mph in street trim but callaway had a body package built for that beast specifically designed for 250mph.

Not saying it's impossible, it just needs to have a lot of planning injected into it.

Yeah, but the Mclaren was specifically designed for that. It was lighter than a jay cloth and had almost no rear downforce.

Actually, jet fuel has lower octane than diesel!!! Less refined. I think that nitrous should do well for 700 hp.

weight doesnt matter for top speed.......what the hell are you talking about. What do you think causes parasitic drag. Aviation fuel is like 100 octane -You are out of your league

Umm, by aviation fuel, I meant fuel used in radial engine prop driven planes. Not brayton cycle turbines (I believe they use kerosene, not sure though).

A lot of aviation fuel is well over 100 octane, and also you should not compare diesel fuel to normal fuel when it comes to octane rating.

The McLaren's speedo posted 247, the R&T radar gun pegged it at 217. I read the article too. BTW, one of Lingenfelter's Vettes that was participating in the test at the same time, ran an unoffical 218 mph w/ the cats removed.
