Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
Hello, has anyone put a 6th gen LT1 with an automatic 8 speed in a 3rd gen? I was going to do an LS3 swap, but found a decent deal on a Complete drop out of a 455 hp LT1 out of a 2017 Camaro SS. Any thoughts or advice are greatly appreciated.

Yes I have built a good number of Gen-5 Engine swapped Third-Gens, and other Vehicles as well.
I usually turn people away from Gen-5 Engines, and direct them to Gen-4 Engines instead.
The Direct-Injection Systems was a good idea on paper (as we Engineers would say)...
But make for disgustingly dirty Intake-Valves and Runners to the point where a large flow-obstruction is created, and uncontrolled detonation occurs.
So for a Performance Gen-5 SBC, I usually:
-Delete all Direct-Fuel Injection System components.
-Delete all AFM/ DOD Valve-Train System components.
-Delete all VVT System components.
With all of this done, the only benefit of the Gen-5 Engine, over the Gen-4 Engine...
is that the Cylinder-Heads flow better (On the Intake side) than any Gen-4 Cylinder-Head.
A ton of Horse-Power can be made with stock or aftermarket LS3 Heads; and even more with LS7 Heads.
So I ONLY recommend the LT1/ LT4 Platform if an LS3 is not making enough power for you.
Below is a previous Post of mine regarding the Gen-5 Engines:

When Building the Gen-5 SBC Engines, I omit the Direct-Injection System:
ICT Billet Block-Off Plates installed after removing all Direct-Injection Components.
Then I often use a Holley Intake-Manifold, such as this Hi-Ram.
No matter what, I use "Normal" Port Fuel-Injectors.
Below is the Holley Hi-Ram for Gen-5 SBC Engines, with PORT Fuel-Injection (NOT Direct-Injection):
Also the DOD/ AFM System and Lifters are removed.
ICT Billet Valley-Cover for DOD/ AFM removal, and Direct-Injection removal:
The VVT System can remain, unless a Camshaft swap is going to Happen.
In that case, the VVT System and Camshaft is also removed:
Thanks for the info. I just found a complete drop out for about the same as the LS3 package I was looking at and I figured I might as well get the extra horsepower if the price is the same but I just didn’t know how hard it would be to fit compared to an LS. I just like it gets decent gas mileage to especially for 455 hp and an eight speed automatic transmission
