zz383 cam question
I am installing a ZZ383 into my 88 Trans Am.......I will use a vortecTPI intake and large tube runners......I'm considering swapping the stock ZZ383 cam for a shorter duration cam....the Lingenfelter 74211 item.....211/219 in order to maximize torque .....any feedback on this cam in a 383 TPI would be appreciated....Thanks
Re: zz383 cam question
Just to give you an idea...
I got the ZZ/SP/HT383 short block and took out the ZZ383 cam that came with it. Put in a Crower EFI cam that has 213@.050 on the intake on a 114 LSA. I'm also running 1.6 rockers, so I might be into the 214-215 duration range.
With a 2500 rpm converter, it idles at 650 rpm with ~16 to 16.5 inH20. Idles smooth as stock. I'm also running a Miniram intake, so with the short runners, it still pulls pretty hard to 5500-6000 rpm, but I know I gave up some power in my pursuit of that smooth idle and somewhat docile driving characteristics.
With a cam like the one your suggesting (that's smaller than mine), and a TPI, I think all you're going to get is low-mid range torque and not much else.
