Re: The boat anchor.

Starting to see more and more 3rd-gen Firebirds with Pontiac 301's swapped in them.

Looks like you don't have a turbo bulge hood. That air cleaner must be close!

"A" for effort. Definitely a unique swap.. Did you do it yourself or did you buy it that way?

I think this is how Pontiac intended it before GM stepped in. I always wanted to see a turbo 301 in one of these. Awesome.

How so?

I "get" the whole "real Pontiac" thing, to a point; butt ... a 301? Seems like ahelluvalotta mazzze with VERY LITTLE cheeeeeezzze at the end... just going off of memory.

Re: The boat anchor.

It's not a choice I'd make, but who really cares what I'd do. I still think it's cool as hell. It's cool to see what people do and can pull off. This **** is like art. And in the end I think it's pretty awesome to see someone create something unique. It's all about an individuals vision. I don't get people still using tpi systems on modded motors and all the numbers matching original cars personally but when I see it I still have tons of respect for the time and thought put in. This car may not be the fastest car when it's done but it will be unique and really cool. I personally wanna see more and how it goes.

I originally had a F.I 400 Pontiac in there that was problematic. I got frustrated one day amd figured I had this little 301T in my garage that cost me $300. Figured I'd put it in place of the 400 for S&Gs, and the 301 just fit better all around, exhaust and all.

Now I'm hooked on the novelty of the Turbo paired with V8 sound.

Thanks friend!
I'm excited to tear up some back roads with it. I view this car as more of an exercise in applying what I've learned over the years. It won't be fast, but it will be a driver oriented car, to the bone.

This thread will soon be updated with a full rewire and BCM install.

Re: The boat anchor.

the 301 just fit better all around
No big surprise there... although the blocks are the same "size" (bore spacing), the 301 is "short deck", while the 400 is "tall deck". The 301 & 350 are "short", all others - 326, 389, 400, 428, 455 - are "tall". Same cams fit em all since they're the same length front to rear, just, the "short" ones lower the heads somewhat. Which also brings the exh manifolds in and down, each by about .7071068 times the "height" difference.

I read an article about that as well. They also said the offset bulge hood was made for the Turbo 301 for clearance. Cool swap. A 200hp Turbo 301 in a thirdgen in 1982 would have been something for sure.

not really pertinent to the thread but I'm pretty sure the pontiac 350 was tall too. Intakes and heads were the same fit. The 267 and 301 were the short deck engines.

Its crazy IMO to go through the trouble of putting a turbo on a V8 engine and still only putting out 200hp. Could have atleast got it to 275 or 300 to make it interesting.

different times really. I mean 200 was over a third more power than the lg4. I think the turbo 301 was rad for the time except for the structural "weight saving" that just made it inherently weaker. That and the lag that was reported on the second gen cars. But take 500 pounds away, reduce lag, I bet it would've been great in 1982 especially compared to 80-81.
