how to build a decent horse engine for everyday driving

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/bowtie/bowtie.html its a pretty basic package and i would strongly recommend the pete jackson timing gear instead of the double roller chain... its loud as hell and sounds like a supercharger. besides any homo with a blue oval on his car will probaly sh*t his pants when he hears that thing screaming. its a good motor for the price and still remains the 9:1 compression for regular pump gas.

Yes that is a great engine and it would be perfect for the street. It would be quite potent too. But for the money you could build that engin cheaper if you wanted too. I am not a crate motor fan because they charge you so much for tone of the easiest engines to find. Tht is my personaly opinion. If you look at hotrod magazing April 01 it has a 491 horse and 436 ftlbs with 9.5:1 compression look at that build up....thats just me!

definately i couldnt agree with ya more man some of the stuff they put in there is totally overpriced ive never been a fan of aluminum heads myself i like cast better i still maintain the fact you can keep the stock low end and everything with a good set of ARP wavelock bolts as long s he rods and crank are still in decent shape. edelbrock also reccomends the dual plane manifold RPM model but im a bigger fan of the victor jr. open plane intake. but i agree with you warrior spare the money on the crate and do it yourself easier on the wallet and better for your pride.

Not sure what planet you guys are from, but a 355 with 234/244 duration @ .050" is neither my defination of "perfect for the street" nor "for everyday driving".

If emmissions are an issue, well...

well man im from planet earth and i can speak for warrior too in sayin so. but hes from michigan and im from illinois and we dont have to worry about emmisions for any purposes and i doubt any cop will wanna get his fat @$$ underneath your hood or car to check for emmisions. i know myself im not a tree hugger and i could give two $hits about all those restrictions you have to put on a car in order to making Johnny the Tree Hugger at UCLA happy. and having a bored out block not only raises horsepower but in most cases people cant afford to go out and buy a brand spanking new block so gettin a block bored 30 over makes perfect sense.. with a 100,000 miles on a car id bet theres just a little wear and tear on the walls wouldnt ya say. why settle for standard... as far as the cam what wouldnt make ya wanna have that little bit of horsepower. chances are if you are driving a camaro to get groceries you probaly need an olds cutlass ciera or a buick riviera. so next time you think about street worthy and ask what planet we are from. think what you have a camaro for to get chicks, get groceries or drive with the purest intention of performance and the durabilty of a chevy muscle car.

I am running this exact setup in my car and I LOVE IT. I even have the noisy pete jackson gear drive timing. I would recommend this setup to anyone who wants to boost their HP a bit. I don't know if I am pushing a full 420 HP yet due to my lack of "tuning" knowledge, but I am very happy as I am getting closer to that number all the time.
