305 or 350?
I know this has been asked many times before, but, what is the visual difference between a 305 and a 350. I have been offered an early 350 (supposedly)-pre 87 and need to know if it is or not.
If necessary, I will take a digital photo of it and post it later.
Thanks.
Andy.

There are no external visual differences between a 305 and 350.
Aside from casting number, that is.
But, there are differences between the years. The biggest one is the center two intake bolts to the head on each side. '86-older will be at the same angle as the others, but '87-newer will be at a different angle than the others.
Block casting number is the only real way to tell without doing a displacement check or taking the engine apart.

Thanks for that.
I bet you can guess what's coming next!
Where's the casting number and what must it be to determine the identity of a 350?
Thanks.

The casting number is a raised set of numbers "cast into" the block. It is located on the back side above where the transmission mounts (I would say "driver's side", but that means something different depending upon what side of the pond you're on - well, I'll say it anyway since you have a bit of the US in your garage).
Go to mortec.com with that number and match it up. Then you'll know.

Sorted!
Thanks Five7kid. Perfect. Checked web site out, cross referenced to another and got the year confirmed!
For those interested it is from a 1977 "B".
