Autozone Engine

Hey everyone, my engine is dead. My head cracked after a hard driven 113k miles. I've been doing research around and can't find a good deal on a 350. I went to autozone to buy oil, and found out they sell a "replacement" engine for a 92 Z28 that I could use. It's a series 1. I'm curious if anyone has known of or actually swapped this engine into their car. If so, how was the performance of the engine. Just curious before I give 800 dollars to autozone. Thanks.

Matt

Ok, well I guess no one has then. Well, how much hp would a really horrible 350 have. Like cheap heads, cam, intake. Wouldn't it still be around 160-170hp. Somewhere in that range.

you could check on the motor swap board to see if any one has used this motor.
I think I would just get a new GM crate motor. Probably cost about the same as a rebuilt motor.

Engine

Are you buying a rebuilt motor? What company is doing it?
Does it have any kind of warranty?
A "Plain Old" 350? What is it? Pre 86?
2 Bolt Main?
4 Bolt Main?
There are a lot of questions I have!
Please be a little specific!

Call this Place at 253-862-1314 they go through a good outfit, be sure of your head sizes(valves) then all you have to do is switch the tin and the cam.Maybe the engine place will know someone close to you. Autozone is like getting an engine through Napa Tams not even something my family would attempt and they own a NAPA.

Dont buy an engine from autozone, plain and simple their suppliers suck. i was a manager of a autozone store out here in cali, and well needless to say my head was always pounding with someone pissed off with our ****ty engines. id reccommend pulling an engine from a junkyard before autozone, at least you have a better chance that the engine was assembled correctly with the junkyard mill.

my bestus buddy in MD is an assistant manager @ AZ, & he has the same opinion as NuclearPwrIroc as far as the AZ engines go.

For me, the price of a reman 95 3.4 is $1499 + core. GM offers NEW 3.4 for $1600. same warranty on both. which would you rather get

If you just need a cheap replacement 350, look into the GM Goodwrench engines. $1300 from Scoggin-Dickey, and you get a real nice GM warranty. You know it's a quality engine also. Performance won't set the world on fire, but it should be decent.

I bought a 350 short block today from CP engines. It was about $671 but I had them balance everything with my flexplate and damper. That cost $165. Went through my uncle he said he has only had 1 bad one in the 4 years he has been dealing with them.

Don't forget that you'll have to pay the core also if you don't have a 350 to give them, if they didn't already tell you that. Probably a couple extra hundred bucks.

By the way, if Scoggin-Dickey has a freight terminal near you, then shipping is free. Something to consider.

Your best bet is probably a gm replacement engine. My buddy at work bought one for his truck for about $1700.00 and he was very pleased with it. Don't buy a jasper engine, they completely suck! I went through three of them in my dodge ram. I'll never buy another engine from those hacks again.

I have installed 5 different Jasper engines at the shop I used to work at and never had a single problem...

the first one I had installed jumped time four times then cracked a cylinder head within two months. Jasper apologized and sent engine number 2. got all my original parts (intake and so forth)installed set the engine in the bay then found that the crank flange had been machined incorrectly and the torque convertor wouldn't go on. last engine went in but still doesn't run as well as the original. If you get a good one I'm glad but I'll never take a chance with them again.
