which way do you turn dist to set timing on new engine
i just put a new MSD pro billet dist in a new GM crate engine. the dist is in correctly(i hope) but which way should it be turned to get to 6 degrees. also, if i am looking at the timing pointer from the drivers side of the car, which way do i want the mark to go to, drivers or passenger side of the zero mark to get to 6 degrees, i know it is a stupid question but i must have leanrt something new and it pushed those directions out the door.
Actually, you don't need a timing light. Try not to worry about what the books or instructions say, and set your timing by ear and eye. If you enging is running shakey and crappy your timing is wrong. Set the timing so the engine runs nice and smooth and sounds good, then take it for a spin and listen for pings or dings, give it a little gas and see how it responds. Also make sure you have the right springs in the MSD because it makes a huge difference, hint - start with the lightest springs and work your way up, a soon as you start to feel a loss of power take a step down and leave it.

I don't think that was the question. If you're asking which side of zero on the timing tab is advanced; when standing over the driver's side fender, the mark on the damper will come from the passenger side, over the top, and towards the driver's side when the engine is running. So, advanced is when the mark shows "before" zero, or towards the passenger side. To get it there, you need to turn the distributor housing counterclockwise to advance, clockwise to retard.
Always use a timing light to set final timing.
Always.
