Went out to get some Mobil1 fully synthetic 5w30 oil to discover that absolutley nowhere in the UK seems to have it in this weight. This is easy to get stuff when I'm in the U.S. but it's no where to be found here. Not only that, but 5w30 isn't very common in general. I have sound a Castrol fully synthetic 0w30 (ssx or something like that) which I'm thinking of going with. However, locar car store reccommended I use Millers oils. He swears by them and I can get a fully synthetic according to him for around half the price of the Castrol.

Anyone ever used Millers oil?

 

Having being in the trade a long time, i can honestly say no, never heard of Millers.
You can get Mobil 1 at any garage here, and i casn get it from my local Macess Trade warehouse, tho it is getting harder to find it.
Probably because of cost.
Ive used Comma synthetic, and many others, but Millers is a new one on me.

 

I can only find Mobil1 in a 0w40. I'll maybe try calling Mobil directly tomorrow and see what they say.

Castrol SLX 0w30 was my second choice after 5w30 Mobil1 if I can not find it here.

 

Ive used Castrol semi-sythetic, and fully synthetic, in most of my motorcycles, including my latest Fireblade.
To be fair i only used the fully synthetic in racing bikes, fully syn is not really for road bikes.
Ive never had a problem, and prefer it to most other oils.
I can't see you having any problems with, its been the choice of most rally teams, and motorcycle race teams since time began.

 

Rob:- I'm currently running Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w30 - 'Motorsport' oil. I purchased it in Halfords at Braehead Shopping centre, best part of a year ago. I haven't been over recently so I don't know if they still carry it.

Demon Tweeks also carry this oil as a stock item but it's about the same price as Halfords, and then a couple of quid for delivery of top of that.

They also stock other handy things like K+N air filter service kits, which I've also found a nightmare to get a hold of. Best of luck, let me know how you get on.

 

When I had my Nissan 300ZX twin turbo, Millers oil came very highly recommended.

Tends to be a bit more expensive, but its piece of mind for a high performance engine like the Zed TT.

dont go nuts on oil fora thirdgen, they simply dont need mega expensive stuff.

Castrol GTX Magnatec is absolutely ideal for these engines, and comes in a range of weights, including something around 5w 30

there is also a 10w40 (ideal if you have a few miles on the clock) and a 15w40

unless your engine is a fresh rebuild, the 10w40 is perfect.

 

Yes Phil, you're absolutely right, that's why i use the 0W40 Castrol RS, one of the worlds best synthetics, for a very reasonable price...!!

I'm still trying for the Mobil1. I have a couple more avenues to try before giving up on it.

I can find it, but not in a 5w30 weight.

 

That's because it's way to thin for European conditions, go for a ..W40 and you'll be fine!
The only reason US car manufacturers recommend such a thin oil, is because they have to, in order to keep fuel consumption low.
Once a car is pressed to it's maximum over and over again ( like we do overhere) those thin oils fail, that's why you can't find it here!!

 

i've said it before and i'll say it again,

Castrol GTX Magnatec 10w 40 is absolutely perfect for our cars, i've not run anything else in mine since i bought it, and 46000 miles down the road (now 136,000) its still running like new.

oil consumption is unchanged from when i bought it at 1 quart in 3000 miles.

 

Castrol GTX Magnatec is a so called hydro crack oil (also known as semi synthetic) and is a very good oil for a daily driver, I totaly agree.
But.......Castrol has far better oils, like the totaly synthetic RS oils, in 10W60 and 0W40 weight. ( I used 10W60 at first, now I use the 0W40 version in my Formula)
They are only marginal more expensive, specialy when you change it 1-2 X a year...!!
Also Castrol recently announced the SLX 0W30 ful synthetic, specialy designed for modern engines with long drain intervals.
To make things even more complicated, the American versus European lubrication market is TOTALY different, what works in the USA might be completely wrong overhere and vica versa....

 

Oil often boils [no pun] down to personal choice, i've had no problems with Mobil Or Castrol.
Remember oil and fuel in the US is a hell of a lot cheaper than europe. I can't afford Mobil 1 for my car, and it costs me enough in my 2K4 Fireblade [oil and filter every 3000 is about £30] , plus my wife and i have an everyday car each.
Personally for the money versus good quality, Castrol comes out top.
As for these long oil change intervals, lets see how these engines are at 10 yrs old or so.
And its true, our climate requires different stuff, but as a well known US motorcycle tuner wrote "any oil is better than no oil"

 

this is why i like the magnatec,

everyone has their own fave oil, but no one seems to have a bad word about castrol. true, there are better oils, but my 136,000 mile (near 200,000 kilometer) 305 probably doesn't need them.

magnatec is relatively cheap, and very easily available. changed every 3000 miles using a pro guage filter, my engine is holding up extremely well, and leaves me in no doubt at all it will likely go on to over 1/4 million miles.

 

What are you planning to put in on the next oil change? Any info on supplier and pricing?

 

5w30 GTX Magnatec is what I'm going to go with. Readily available and you can get it for about £20.

 

If you want Mobile1 oil from the US, I can ship it to you

Edit: also if you want AC Delco oil filters too

 

well, the thirdgen is long gone now but i am still using castrol magnatec in my 96 mustang, (currently at 47,000 miles) for 2 reasons..

1) its easy to find in the correct weight for my car (5W 30)

2) i do lots of high speed long distance driving (got a 500 mile round trip coming up on saturday to france and belgium - calais, St omar, ostend and bruges) so i need a good stable oil for a reasonable price..

i'm quite open to try new things, but no one seems to be able to recommend anything any better in that weight at that price.. there are better oils, but they cost a hell of a lot more..

 

Phil, The 5W30 weight is intended for use in the USA.
Overhere driving conditions are completely different, so I suggest to use Castrol's best oil: Castrol Edge RS 0W40 fully synthetic, you can't get any better...!!
(you are aware that the Castrol Magnatec range ( a good oil in itself!) is part synthetic=hydrocrack oil)
