I think it is the perfect time to take out the black box, just fab up some sheet metal to cover the hole in the firewall, this will make changing your plugs so much easier too.

no leave the black box in damnit!!!

ok hear is what u got to do. i just did this to my car last week, im telling u that u dont have to remove that black box. i got an 83 ta and im sure u have the same clearance as i do. first take off the dust cover off the flywheel then take out the starter. then remove the spark plugs, remove the air pump pump if u already haven't. ok now this is the hard part but it can be done, this part took me 30 minutes to wiggle it in the right place, ok put the collector at the front of the motor and slide it back, now u just got to wiggle it around until u find the sweet spot and then it will slide in perfect, but i warn u once u get it in u have about 1/2 inch of clearance from ur tranny and ur frame! hope i might have helped but dont remove the box!

Man, chill out guys, I didn't say you had to remove the box, but man, it will clear up a lot of clutter, make changing the plugs a lot easier and will really improve the appearance of the engine bay. That's what I plan on doing sometime.

I just put in some SLP shortie headers last weekend, but they weren't Hookers so I don't know if this applies to you. Anyway, I had to unbolt the air compressor and set it to the side as well as bend the crap out of my dipstick to get my passenger side header to go in. I would assume that you don't have a compressor anymore since you're not running air conditioning, though. Mine just practically fell in when I did those two things. I did have a couple of fatalities, though... had to get a new fan switch (broke it) and still need to get a new dipstick & tube (already mentioned...they dont' bend back too well ). Just thought I'd throw in my $.02.

Why bend the dipstick? Mine's only held in with 1 bolt and it just slips into the block, give it a little tug and it comes right out.

The only issues I had putting in my passenger's side SLP was the dipstick and the coolant hardline for the heater. I already ripped my A/C out, which made it a *hell* of a lot easier.
