Are full length headers possible with a T-5 in a thirdgen?

I haven't seen a set of headers that say they'll fit T-5 equiped thirdgens......my friend has full length headers on his stick shift firebird but he swapped to a 4 speed saginaw that has the clutch fork and piston located differently. I think the 1/5/8inch dynamax headers are a limiting factor on my engine combo now.....its a proven 430+HP setup but all dyno tests I've seen use full length 1 3/4inch headers with true duals. Right now I have the 1/5/8inch dynamax and y pipe to a true 3inch hooker aerochamber exhaust. My friend with the dual 3inch system on his 3rdgen seems to have gotten a SIZABLE HP gain when he swapped from a similar exhaust setup to mine, to the duals setup.

To fit heddman full lenghts with a T-5, I had to grind the flange on the bellhousing where the slave cylinder mounts, and cut a part on the underside of the chassis as well. Even so, there was still contact. Never had problems with heat at the starter or slave cylinder though. After a little while I switched to shortys to get rid of the noise from headers hitting the car when the engine torqued over, and to solve ground clearance problems. Hope that helps.

Chris,

I've done a lot of research on this very subject. I've contacted a lot of people who I've found on this message board who have put the Hedman long tube headers on a car with a T-5 tranny.

Some have done the grinding like MikeS, and other have bent the headers or had them bent to fit.

But the options for long tube headers absolutely SUCK for our cars...and that bites.

I am going to be playing around with a set soon, so when I head up to Tucson we'll have to get together so I can tell you how I've done.

I've read that Hooker Supercomps are the way to go and that just about everyone has trouble fitting the hedman's. I'm curious about this too as I have a T-5 (possibly going to T-56 in the summer) and I would much rather long tubes over the shorties.

I guess that they can have more serious trouble fitting than the hedman hedders.

There is a guy on here named Phil that has hooker supercomps on his manual. I believe his name is phil87iroc or something like that. If you search for supercomp and long tubes you will probably eventualy find a link to his site that has pictures of them on his iroc.

I don't belive that there are any fit problems with Hooker supercomp long tubes (no bending/cutting etc.). I researched that option a while ago, but they were too expensive for me.

I've heard of a few people that have defintely had trouble fitting the Hookers in there...and yet others who have NOT had any trouble at all.

So that just leads me to believe that there is no sure bet.

Some people say to fit the Hooker SC's in there you have to drop the engine a little bit! Now if that's not going out of your way for a supposed "bolt on" then I don't know what is.

All I know is I WANT long tubes....

Hooker LT's for me with stock T5. Clearance couldn't be better. Didn't have to modify anthing as far as transmission and clutch wise.
