Best place to put oxygen sensor?

I'm installing an air/fuel ratio gauge and was wondering where the best place would be to put the oxygen sensor? Should I put it on one of the headers by the collector or should I put it somewhere further down the exhaust where it could 'sense' both sides of the motor instead of just one side? All the stock oxygen sensors are placed on the manifold so I suppose thats the best place but it just makes more sense to put it somewhere where it can get a reading from the entire motor rather than just one side of it. So where should I place it? and why..?
