help on headers. Cheap, good fit, O2, AIR not necessary
help on headers. Cheap, good fit, O2, AIR not necessary
What headers and Y pipe offer a good fit, and a good price? The car right now is a 91 firebird w/ 305. It will be getting a 400 after a year or more. It has the single cat which I will bypass but need the Y to line up with so I can just use a straight piece. I do not require the Air tube fittings but would like some w/ an 02 censor bung (will get one installed if necessary.)
I believe the only 1 3/4 are slps which are to expensive and from some of what I heard fit like crap. So something in a 1 5/8 will work.
I heard good and bad about headmans. I heard the y-pipe sucks. Is that because it is too small? I would like one around 3"
I also read about headmans hitting the frame. I think I will be replacing the engine mounts w/ some energy suspension or whatever you guys reccomend.
In summit I saw some Hooker shortys but they did not have a Y-pipe to go with. Is there anywhere that sells seperate y-pipes?
Someone said the Edelbrocks fit great. Can someone back this up and tell me the PN and prices for the one I will need. Summit has them from $315-360 or so.
I know I have a lot of ?s but this is the right place and I could really use some help and Im sure im not the only one. tell me what you have and your experiences.
Thanks a bunch

My hedmans fit fine. No problems at all. And as said you can fix the 2 1/2 problem by cutting that section off and welding in some 3".
seems kinda retarded to spend $100 (that right?) for a y-pipe just to hack it up and put more money into.
Isnt there any better y-pipes out there?
What size is the y-pipe for the edelbrocks? looks like $315 for the single 3 inch slip on cat my cat is definately not 3 but it will be removed and replace w/ 3 in pipe so it will work right?
Also does anyone have any more info on the early thirdgen cheap hooker catback. I heard a mention of it but want some details.
Thanks guys, I may still wind up going w/ the headmans and dealing w/ the smaller pipe for a while

If im not mistaken the hedmans are 140 + 100 for the y-pipe. The edelbrocks are $315. Now if you paid more than $75 for the custom work then it obviously wasnt cheaper.
I still dont know What size the y is that comes on the edelbrocks. (someone fill me in please) I just heard one guy on here that was bitching about the SLPs on his buddys car and how good his eddys were.
I may still go with hedman. I just want to find out why everyone says the y-pipe sucks. The MAC which I just looked at is 2 1/2 also and way overpriced (MAC SUCKS ANYWAY)

yo if you have a 305 all you need to spead is $200 on the flowtech headers and y-pipe
they are 1.5 inch primaries which is what you want when you have a milddly moded 305 it is all you need and any bigger you start to lose torq
let me also say that these headers fit just as good or most of the time better then the more expencive slps and hookers
with the slps you might have to dent your perfect new headers to get them you fit near the stering shaft
trust me i have them and my friend 84silverbirdSE have them and they are one of the best mods i have done to date and most effective also get the 3" flowmaster system to go with it
you win not be disapointed

The hedman Y is 2 1/2" for about a foot and half or so after the actual Y. The Y itself is big enough for 3" dont know why they only used 2 1/2. The pipes ahead of it are big enough too considering that they only have 1/2 the engine feeding into each one. You could do what I'm doing. I ordered a 3" elbow and some 3"pipe, and am going to weld it together myself. Guess it depends on if you have access to a welder. If not take the Y into a shop before you install and have it modded. Should cost less out of the car, all they have to do is copy the stock bends and weld it on.

the hedman ypipe kinda sucks because the collectors are not smooth when it goes from 3" to 2.5" i smoothed them out with a die grinder also when the two pipes come together it comes to single 2.5" pipe and the transition is not smooth the 2.5" pipe is welded inside of the collector of the two individual pipes. i cut this out so that all i had was a single 3" opening the shop welded 3" pipe on it right there.
p.s. they did it with the ypipe on the vehicle because they said that they didnt want to make any bends for an exhaust system that they werent looking at.
my situation turned out great i fixed everything that was wrong with the hedman ypipe and it didnt cost too much.
different edelbrock headers come with differect sized ypipes. i think the biggest ones come with 3" single pipe and two 2.5" pipes

WTF do you mean fixing it up? The stang or the firebird. Serioulsy If you mean the stang you must be joking. I talk on lots of sites for chevys, camaros, and mustangs, and on the mustang sites I am in the slower 25% on the boards (2or 3 of em) and comparing to being in probably the faster %60 or above on the third gen sites. If you mean the bird that we got for $500 it is my girlfriends car and we have plans for it and I would rather go mostly from the ground up so that can get everything done right. Instead of ditching it and spending more on one that looks nicer.
Thanks for the better explanation on the modifying of the hedmans. If the $315 edelbrocks are the 3" ones I may go w/ those but hedmans sound good to me.
Whatever... Im drunk I ll be back tomorrow.

Oh my fn *** you suck you fn' moron.
not trying to offend any third-genners on here, because most at least have a little respect fot at least their american v-8 competition but you sir are a douche.
you are incredibly mis informed. camaros handle better and the 4th gens (ls1s) are faster. Ill give you that. but Thirdgens were definately not very fast. I believe stangs were faster from 87-92 from the 302ho w/ E7heads and SEFI, Until the Lt1s appeared in the new body style GMs.
Mustangs have probably the best aftermarket of any cars in america. This is the exhaust board right. 3rd gen exhaust systems arent bad in price but you still have single. $th gens are rediculus in price. $500 or so for headers. no thanks. your comment about spending so much is plain false
Mustangs are easier to work on. particularily the 4th gens w/ the engine under the dash so far you can only see 1/2 of it and then how much that dash intrudes inside the car, The bumps on the floor. jeez. My interior is so much nicer than 3rd gens and fox bodys, havent owned a 4th so cant really comment.
and good lord what the hell do these things weigh? my car is around 3400 and Im sure the firbird is at least 200lbs more.
How about them rear ends? hmm. Gm aint got their *** on that one still. 7.75 or whatever compared to the 8.8 ford that can go 10s easy with an axle upgrade. Im scared to put this bird in the 12's without putting a $2000+ rear end.
Im not the one trying to bash anyone. f-bods and Mustangs are both great cars in my mind. Their are better and worse traits of each one. what you want out of the car and which you prefer the looks of is the only reason to choose one over the other. You cant just say one sucks and not back it up.
ah hell, why am I wasting time replying to you when I could be reading other posts learning things for myself and trying to help people when I can. This is what these forums are all about not being an *** such as yourself.

Nothing I like more than smoking mustangs but at the same time I would never put on down to such a degree. I have been in plenty of fast mustangs and always had a blast. I have been in plenty of fast camaros and always had a blast. I like mustang owners that apriciate cars in general because I have grown to appreciate cars in general.
