Hooker longtubes install advice?
Hey guys, I'm getting ready to put the motor back in my Z to complete the motor freshening and six speed swap!! The question I have for you guys is, any advice on the best way to install my new hooker super comp longtube headers? Is it possible to bolt them to the motor before dropping the motor in the engine bay? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Laters,
Mike

i would think you can bolt them to the motor before the install....but just be very careful you don't get the collectors hung up on anything that would cause you to bend the tubes all up. be careful not to bang the primaries into the frame or steering shaft and dent them. but to be safe....i'd put them in after.....they go in pretty easy from the bottom if you put the car on some high jack stands.

1bad91Z,
Are you planning to use cats with the exhaust? What y-pipe setup are you using? I'm really curious how the install will work with the slave cylinder of the 6 speed really close to the exhaust. Would there be anyway you could email me or post some pictures??

Tom - I have coated Hooker 2210's (1 3/4" longtubes) with the dual 3 in. to 4 in. mufflex y-pipe. The y-pipe has provisions for o2 sensors. Then I will weld on a car-sound 3 in. high flow cat (right behind the y-pipe and hook it up to the rest of my flowmaster cat-back. I completely removed all of the emissions crap (air tubes, smog pump, etc.) I will be dropping the motor back in probably tomorrow. I'll take some pics as soon as I have the exhaust all welded up. Any others have more advice on installation tips for the longtube hooker's? Thanks again!

Mike that would be great if you could take some pictures when the exhaust is done. Sorry I couldn't offer any technicial help on your install. I'm sure others on this board will be very excited to see the pictures of the Long Tubes with the T56.
I'll keep in touch. Is there an email that you use? Mine is in my profile.

I just test fit my long tubes today ... but, my motor is already in the car so my install is much more difficult than yours. I want to post my initial install experiences here since there is already a thread started and this will help when people do searches later on.
First - some advice that I can give you regarding general LT installs on a thirdgen ...
1) Move the knock sensor over to the driver's side. Much much more room in that area.
2) If you have the chance - definitely install some ES poly motor mounts. This will keep problems of exhaust sagging due to rubber motor mounts at a minimum. With LTs you have to worry about ground clearance so get your exhaust all in place with some poly motor mounts and then you won't have to worry about the sagging exhaust later on down the road.
3) Use a mini-starter.
4) Notch a few places on the k-member. After my test fit today I found 4 places (3 on the passenger side and one on the driver's side that need some slight clearancing. I marked the places and will do some slight grinding to provide the necessary clearance.
5) O2 sensor bung (if you want to put one in the header) goes in the TOP of the collector. This will give you the most room.
As far as installing long tubes with the motor already in the car ... be patient. The headers can only go in from the BOTTOM of the car. The headers must go in ALMOST vertically with the collector pointing almost straight down at the ground. At first the passenger side seemed like the most difficult - but, in fact, I was able to slip the passenger side header up in without jacking the engine up. The driver's side required me to jack up the engine slightly. I had to remove the oil filter and the oil pressure sensor at the filter mount.

I just layed mine on the inside fenderwells when i sat my motor into the hole and then moved them over and bolted them on. There is NO WAY you can install the motor with them already bolted to the heads.

After pulling the motor 6 times, I finally clearanced all the area's that are needed! That was the biggest pain in the ****!! In retrospect, I should have bought the SLP shorty's. I'd sacrafice the 10HP to not have the bullcrap I went through with the longtubes! But, they're in there now!!
