Problems with flowmaster 80
Problems with flowmaster 80
I got screwed out of my dual exhaust and now I got a 3" system on my car.
SLP headers into a 3" pipe to a flowcrapper 80 muffler. No cats. When I hit the 1500-2000 rpm range my exhaust sounds like a damn golf ball rattling around in a metal can. It's really loud and quite annoying.
It doesn't do this in neutral, only when accelerating. I don't think it's susposed to do this, do you? Besides this problem, it doesn't sound bad, but definatly can't beat the sound of duals

It does that because you have your cats gutted. Its wierd, some people with flows say how awesome it sounds after cats are gutted and other say it sounds like ****. Wierd...

I'll agree that the lack of a cat will do that to the sound. I have a cat, and the sound would be like you describe, I'm sure, if I didn't (it is almost there, but not quite, you know?).
Believe it or not, the sound can kind of grow on you. That's why Flows have such a huge following (besides their reputation for good flow). I wasn't too impressed with it when I first put the system together last winter, but with daily driving, I've gotten used to it. When you hear it, your brain just says, "Power!"
On the other hand, the Warlocks on my '57 are just plain loud. And, that tinny sound is even worse. That's with duals, of course. So, don't blame everything on being stuck with a single pipe system.

i know what you are talking about, i know two guys who have flowmasters, one is 40 the other 80, both have that weird kinda rattling sound when they accelerate but not at idle, at idle their cars sound pretty mean for v6's.

I cannot say this for myself because I purchased my car with the american thunder cat back. But ive seen a whole bunch of people saying there's get louder.
As for the golfball sound, in that rpm range I don't know if it sounds like a golfball but it kind of sounds like the muffler is gonna blow up or something. That's on mine and my friend's 98 Mustang GT that has the cats removed, the same sound. Never thought of it as a golfball though.

40 series on 97
my brother has a 97 z28 with a 40 series on his and that is one of the best sounding cars i've ever heard. i have an 80 series, no cat, the tips are about 5"x24", and i'm going to put headers on it. the engine isn't in yet but i cant wait to hear what its going to sound like.
I have dual flowmasters on my truck and I also have that tinging sound but mine hits at about 2500 to 3500. Flowmasters suck on non-catted autos. That pining is from the percussion wave from the exhaust hitting the baffles inside the muffler. The only way to get rid of that sound is to get rid of those mufflers and get different ones, prefferbly ones without internal baffles. One's with perferated tubes always sound the best. Hooker aerochambers seem to sound very goodwithout the use of perffed tubes. afterbuners and raptors sound good too. just trying to give you some suggestions. Hope this helps.
