Spin Tech VS. Flowmaster Mufflers
Spin Tech VS. Flowmaster Mufflers
Which one (80 series Flowmaster VS. same crossflow design in Spin Tech) sounds better? Is louder? Provides more power? And which one is just all around better for someone looking for a little more power and a deep, a bit noisy, rumble? Note: this is for an '89 camaro 5.7L TPI. Thanks.

Let me just say this, Spintech does not have that bad resonencs (sp) in the car like flowmasters do. I don't have the crossflow type of muffler, I'm running their race muffler. Friend of mine has the larger muffler (like 2.5x the case size of mine) on his truck and it's got a nice rumble to it. Doesn't sound hollow or tinny like flowmasters do.

So the Spin Tech will still give me a somewhat loud, nice rumble outside of the car while night haveing a lot of interior noise like the 80 series Flowmaster? Man, if you don't have your Spin Tech in the crossflow design, don't you have a lot of ground clearance problems? Anyways, since I'm doing the exhaust soon, do you think I should wait, save up a little money and put headers on too? Will the headers really make a big difference? And are they worth the extra time and money? Thanks. -89IRO

I vote for spintech, and yes the headers will make a big difference. The stock manifolds are junk. I would reccomend getting hedman's. They're like $100 for the headers and $100 for the y-pipe. Somebody around here probably has the part number.

The only ground clearance problems I have is with the Spohn crossmember, that's the lowest point on the car at the moment. The muffler I have is tucked up in the stock location mounted sideways to where the exhaust enters it from the passenger side and exits on the drivers side. It'll set off car alarms so it's plenty loud for me.

I asked the guys at Mufflex this very questin when I ordered my 4" setup.
They said that the Flowmaster is louder with more interior resonance.
The Spintech is a little quieter.
Both flow about the same.
I ordered the Spintech. Their setup has a crossflow with dual outlets.

Dragula- since you got the Spin Tech, what is it like? What brand cat do you use? You say it's not as loud as the flowmaster, but is it at least noticable and does it somewhat have a nice rumble? Oh, and are you running headers? Since I'm on a limited budget, do you think I should spend money on headers right now? Because I am just planning on the 3" pipe to the dual 2.5" outlets on the Spin Tech muffler. -89IRO
Don't really know. They custom make every one and I am still waiting on mine to arrive. I had them also fabricate a length of pipe to span the gap where the convertor used to be. I also had the Hooker y-pipe modified to get rid of the 3" pipe that used to go into the cat.
It would be a waste, in my opinion, to get a good cat-back without headers, but people do it all the time!
Sorry I can't help more with the sound of the Spintech. With mine being a 383ci, Hooker Super Comp headers, and no cat......it will sure be darn rumbley:lala:

Hey, that sounds really cool, what model of the Spin Tech are you getting? (I'm looking at the 343 SC Split Case right now.) Hey, I got a dumb question- a lot of guys (including you) say they don't run a cat, now I know this increases flow and HP, but what do you guys do when it's time to get it smogged? -89IRO
I am not sure what style of SPintech Mufflex uses.
As for the no-cat issue......usually those of us without don't have to do the smog test. I live in boonie north Texas where they don't care about emissions. They check my horn and tire-tread and that's about it.
