Legal trouble :(
Sorry, I know its not tech.
I got a ticket for my american thunder flowmaster cat back being to loud. Can I write to flowmaster and have them send me a statement saying its legal.
I don't know who else to ask.

I think the law is that any replacement exhaust system must be no louder than the original exhaust system. Well it is in some places, so I'm not really sure if you're going to be able to get out of that one.

It doesn't matter what Flowmaster or any company claims is legal. Cities and Towns have their own noise ordinances. I know how it is, I've paid for three of these damn violations, yet those damn Harleys keep screaming around town ! I can't figure it out.

Flowmaster is not going to have a clue about your local noise laws unless you live across the street from the company and even then, they would probably tell you to call the police or the courts for that information.

I'm afraid I have to go with Steve-83Z. Towns and cities have their own ordinances. If you wanted to make an example out of the issue, fight it. Find a lawyer, and dig as deep as possible. See if any of the police have Harleys, or other loud vehicles. The down side, is this would be expensive. Personally I would find out what the sound laws are in your town. If they went out of bounds to get you, fight it. We have a lot of ricers with fart pipes, and loud stereos. I would be pissed if I were nailed with exhaust and they said it was to loud.

Just wondering, but were you getting on it when you got pulled over? If so then you probably can't do much, but if not then you should try to fight it.

All you have to do is request that the court set a date for your car to get a sound test done. I don't know the exacts, but it can only be 'so loud from so far away'. Like here in IL I know that your stereo can be no louder than 75dB from 100ft. away. Although there is a clause in there that also says something about the officer's judgement.
Kinda like "Driving too fast for conditions". If there's 20 rain drops on the road and you're doing the speed limit around a curve, then the cop can give you a ticket if he/she thinks you were going too fast, and there ain't sheet you can do about it.

The fact that it's emissions legal has absolutely nothing to do with you getting a ticket for excessive noise.

I'll have to look into it getting sound tested.
This is
So much time and effort for nothing.

Yeah, it's called the SLP Loudmouth, and it's a 3" stainless steel cat-back with only a resonator, no muffler. It's the loudest cat-back around, easily as loud as a cut-out. My Z28 is DEAFENING at 6000 RPMs...and what exhaust for a third gen is as loud? I don't think there's any...
Sucks you got a ticket...I've been lucky, but it seems cops around here don't mind as much. Tell us what happens!

Now does that stuff apply even to out-of-towners? I know around here there's basically no emissions, no ordinances, no bs at all. In our neighboring county, however, they have all that bs. I ask because I saw a late model mustang with a really loud exhaust pass a cop in the other county, who was obviously sitting there clocking people, but he didn't grab him, and he was from out of state. So what I'm asking is if I pass through a town with a noise ordinance that I don't know about, can I get pulled over, or get a ticket?

Depends on the cop on that one. I know in the state of missouri we used to have some tight tint laws. You could come in from illinoise with most of your car blacked out and it was just a matter of what cops saw you as to whether or not you got pulled over. It was enforcible upon out of state vehicles but most didn't bother. As for the exaust i would call around to your local city government officies and to Flowmaster and see what they say. then if you decide to fight it make sure you mention the fact that motorcylces can run an open exaust causing the same amout of noise if not more and that alot of the imports seem to get away with the bumble bee fart exaust while you get pulled over.
I know that when I had on my Midas Gold Mufflers I got a ticket but when I got a sound test the judge threw it out It is a cops discretion but that is the problem not all cops are the same besides you probably just disturbed his sheep counting

Gees,I'm really glad that I read this thread before I put on my Flowmaster.I'm not sure how anul the cops are in these parts, but I think that I will check out some noise by-laws first. For starters my neighbours may get pissed, but at least they won't issue me a ticket.

motorcycles and large trucks can get away with loud exaust because they fall under diff. standards than cars.
my supra was strait pipe and it had to be one of the loudest cars around here ( sounded like a 4 proped air plane at speed) and i have never gotten in trouble for it. my camaro is goint to have a 6 1\2 in down pipe spliting into 2 4in pipes then into boom tubes out the side. it would be loud but the turbo should quitet it down to be about as loud as it is with y dules out the back.
like they said, it depends on the cops, and the town. we dont even have to have emissons tests here. so some places are more strickt than others.
good luck
anthony

The judge did it
The judge gave me a list of like seventeen different places to do it however in south Carlina I don't know how they do it elsewhere they don't give ya time to swap exhaust it will be mandated to be within 24 hours of the issuing of the sound test and the hearing will be rescheduled if it is above a certain decibal the charge can stick if it aint the cop can go whack off and clock himself
TAGal just do it
Hey the rice rockets get away with too much and I always like to see a lady out there louder than me the only **** cop around here retired and he only got mad cause I would wake him up if you really want to know how **** the cops are just ask them when you see them around they will tell ya just make sure to talk to all agencies kay

you guys will laugh at this like everyone else used to, but i had a 92 achieva with the w41 in it so it was faster than an import. I finally got pissed with all there little weed wacker sounding cars so i cut off my exhaust ran 2.5 exhaust into a 5" wide by 24" long tips, u could hear the car over a mile away and i never once got pulled over for it. sounded louder than most V8's i loved it. Ya i think ur ticket is BS, just my 2 cents worth
u got a ticket becuz u were too loud.
the flowmaster american thunder system isnt that loud. my brother has it on his 91 z28 and a friend has it on his 90 irocz 1le and there both not loud.

I think it pissed him off when I rev'ed up on him.
I just found out he drives a Mustang GT. That wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that my tags
say 5-02SLOW. I don't think that made him happy.

I have to ask if your car is nice looking or not. If it is, he sees someone who likes to "hotrod" and will write a ticket. If you have a crappy looking car that has no exhaust or a huge hole in the muffler he wont bother you for being a broke bastard. Or like the joke says:
What is the difference between a Harley and a Hoover?
The placement of the dirtbag.
"That's just my opinion. I could be wrong." :lala:

Anything behind the cat does not qualify as an emission control item so a 50 state legal is not in effect.
Isn't this a fix-it type ticket ? I had a noise violation once. I unbolted the collectors from the headers, packed some chicken wire with steel wool to keep it together and cramed it in the exhaust.. Talk about a power loss. Then I drove to the local highway patrol office and had them sign off the ticket. Went right back home, took it out and hit the street...
I Got my court date, went to court with the signed off ticket in hand in the same loud a$$ car I got pulled over in.. The judge made me pay the court cost only.
Never was pulled over again for that reason again.

LOL, I have a friend who has a license plate that reads: "I (heart) Cops" (In CA, we have personal plates that can use symbols as well... heart, star, handprint are a few) and even that gets him pulled over occasionally. Guess a lot of the cops can see through the sarcasm!
i got a flowmaster with no cat and i havent gotten in trouble.... yet. About 2 months ago i was going down I-10 through downtown San Antonio and i was in a little bit of a hurry. I was doing 110 and the speed limit was about 50. Passed a motorcycle cop, he was between two cars, and the cop pulled up next to me while i was doing 110. I look over at him and he has this big dumb *** grin on his face. He shakes his head from side to side and then takes off, leaving me wondering what the hell just happened. BTW, i never slowed down. I guess he liked camaros. Could been the Flowmasters at about 4000 rpms that did it, though.
