Is ceramic coated headers really worth it?

Im just trying to make some sense out of it. First of all it costs almost $200 more to get headers ceramic. Second of all ceramic coated headers are aluminized, which to me is inferior to stainless steel. Plus ive heard that the ceramic coating can chip away, leaving just the aluminum exposed.

So again, why pay the extra $150-200 to pay for coating, which in reality your actually downgrading to aluminum coated headers, from stainless steel non-coating headers.

What do u guys think?

Thanks

Me thinks you need better information. Had budget allowed, I certainly would have gone for it.

Ceramic coating provides thermal insulation, which is good both for power and reducing under-hood heat (which is what makes it worth doing on stainless headers). Ceramic coating is very tough, resistant to chipping. Ceramic coating keeps its color, doesn't blue like chrome, rust like steel, dull like stainless, and protects the metal under it from corrosion (and stainless can corrode).

It is best done to new headers, and best to be done inside and out. I've never heard of anyone who wishes they hadn't done it.

Ceramic coated headers are WELL worth the extra money...trust me, i have had my set of headers, still in perfect condition, whereas my brother is on his second pair of POS uncoated headers from dynomax. My advice would be to pay the extra and get the ceramic coated, they'll last a lifetime

Ok guys, thanks for the info. I always prefer advise from someone who actually has had them, than from a know-it-all guy who never has seen one.

Then its either SLP or Hooker headers. But since i prefer Hooker cat-back over SLP cat-back, i might just go Hooker on both.

Thanks again guys, later.

Oh those "POS oncoated headers from Dynomax" are they stainless steel? And how did it take for them to get bad?

oh, about a year or so, then they started gettin all crusty and sorts...the hooker shorties p/n 2460-1 from jegs. They are $328 for ceramic coated which is a nice price....downfall though, is that you have to get a y-pipe made for them. The super comps make a long tube, p/n 2210-1 but those bad boys for ceramic coated are $659.99. I dont know its up to you...all im sayin is I would highly recommend hooker, I havent been dissapointed yet, nor have I heard any complaints.

Just somethin to think about!

If you have the money, it's definitely worth it to have them coated. It lowers underhood temps a lot. I'm glad I had mine done.

Got my Hooker 2055's direct from Jet Hot. Came with 3'' coated Y pipe, and the install was easy.

Thanks again guys. Well once the money is in, and i'm ready to do it, im about %90 sure i'm gonna get Hooker Super Comp Headers Ceramic Coated 1 3/4 X 28 3inch. But at a steep price of $659.99, but hey ive heard nothing but good about them from u guys, so its a go.

Heres the link to them from Jegs in case anyone else was looking into headers.

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...er+Competition

I hope these are the right ones, plus arent shorties basically the same thing? There cheaper!

You should be able to find a better deal than that, but it's your money.

Wish I had that kind of money to use on just headers.

Hedman Headers (coated) p/n 68476 $294
Y-pipe $100
Hooker Cat-back $200
High Flow Catalytic Converter $70
Percy's Dead-Soft Aluminum Gaskets $35

Total = $699

......somebody check my work please

And by the way, I believe that 1 3/4" primaries is too large for your stated goal of 275 HP. I would keep it at 1 5/8"

By the way, how emissions legal do you need to be up there?

this is what i get......for super comp long tube ceramic coated headers 1982-1992 265-400 block.....

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...er+Competition

or hell man...just do what i did...go with the 1x5/8 ceramic coated shorties p/n 2460-1 and have someone make you a y-pipe...a good exhaust/performance shop can do that.

Ok, i understand about the 1 5/8 tube sizing cause of just how much hp i wanna get, but then again SLP suggest i go with 1 3/4 tube sizing for 350 V8 engine. I mean serious, whats about the amount of HP u would need to take advantage of 1 3/4, if its like 350HP, hell i'll go the distance and get there if thats the case.

About the Y-pipe, doesnt Hooker just make a Y-pipe sold seperate, or is custom making it the only way to go on it?

Hey metkiss, those are the shorties 1 3/4 u talking about?

Hey gunny, believe me, i dont grow money, and actually i'm trying to get out of this damn dead end job so i can start home appraising, till that transition comes and can only dream of all this stuff.

Yeah, once I hit 18, my money flow got cut like a mother. More bills + less money + less help + more beer = BIG DEBT. Oh yeah, and this in on military pay.

Yes they do. I've found it before online, but it took me about a 1/2 hour to find it.

Give me a few and I'll find it again. This time I'll bookmark it.

The only y pipe your gonna find for the 1 3/4 Hooker SC long tubes is the Mufflex piece, or have one custom made. It is dual 3" in and single 4" out.
The Mufflex one is around $250 or $275 with an O2 bung.
This is however one of the best exhaust systems you can run for top hp, but unless you get creative you can kiss using cats goodbye.

Hooker doesn't sell any y-pipe separately. The only one they make/sell comes with the 2055's. It doesn't fit the 2460's, either.

I found it, but it's made for a Corvette. I doubt it would work with a Camaro/Firebird, but who knows. Maybe it would with only a slight amount of tweeking.
