test pipe length?

this may sound stupid but i know the a place that will do anything u want to the car if u take the cat off. my question is if i take the cat and gut it or just use the pipe how long should i have it made so that i can just clamp it on incase michigan decides to start inforcing the emmisions law. if i have flanges on each end how does it bolt on? this mod shouldnt cost a whole bunch should it?? byt he way i have a 1988 pontiac formula with a tpi 350

Well the easiest would be to gut the cat, but make the straight pipe the same length as the cat. Make sense? Then if you flange everything, you can bolt either the cat or the pipe in when you want.

Go to a muffler shop and ask them to make you one. Be careful tho, I dont know MI smog laws, but if you have smog check, a lot of the muffler shops wont do it for fear of getting fined.

Take the cat off, bring it to the shop and they will make a test-pipe. The law usually says that if you drive into the shop with a cat, you have to leave with one. If you carry the cat in, they cannot get into trouble.

Just made one last week. I bought a universal fit kit from NAPA. It came with the bell and flange for the output side of the converter and 2 clamps. I cut a piece of 3" pipe 18"long and welded it to the bell. You could just clamp it though. The front of the converter is just a slip fit. I had MIDAS expand the other end of the pipe to 3"ID and it slipped right over and clamped. Cut off the AIR pipe and plug it because if you ever have to reinstall the cat you can use silicone exhaust hose to put it back together. The whole thhign cost me about $30 and looks great and souds even better with the Hooker sys.
