Cracking exhaust sound !

Hi Guys,
I wanted to know if anyone could help me figure out how I'm getting a cracking exhaust sound in my 89 IROC L98? I just installed a set of 1 3/4" SLP headers and Y pipe with a new Random Tech Cat. Now I get this cracking sound out of my exhaust. Any suggestions?

Ever had headers on a car before?

If not, the cracking sound is probably just due to the thinwall construction of the header tubes, versus the thickwall of a cast iron manifold.

With headers, you can literally hear the cylinder firing and exhaust coming out. Kinda 'tinny' or crackling sound.

Hey, other than the sound, did it make a SOTP difference? That was the combination I was about to try.

The sound is Great and there is a known difference in performance. I also have a Gale Banks Power pack system, cat back with all 3" stuff.........Works for me !

My car made the same noise when I put the SLP Headers and Y-pipe on the car (84 Z-28 w/355).
The noise went away when I put the SLP Cat-back on. In fact the car sounded completely different when I put the cat-back on, it ran and sounded better.
-Well I just read your last post, sorry I got a little ahead of myself. How long has the exhaust been on the car? Maybe it needs to "blow out"(I don't know the exact term) the muffler. My muffler sounded better after a few hundred miles.

The muffler and pipes have been on for over three years. The SLP headers and Y pipe just about a month!

mine does the same thing i just put some hooker headers on in jan - mine only does it when i lay on the gas a little although. I think my prob is I have a 3 inch y pipe and then a 3 inch high flow cat and it goes into a 2 1/4 inch pipe before entering the muffler
